this should probably be in the insurance section but wont get much attention and i kinda need an urgent answer..

thing is my mate has a clio and he's insured fully comp on it, he thinks he can drive his dad 2.2 tdi mondeo and be insured 3rd party, he's drove up to scotland with me in it a few times (well not really as he does 125 most of the way!)

i thought you had to be a certain age to have this (hes 18) but he seems to think if your fully comp i can drive my dads tdi audi which sounds good lol as im fully comp on my car.

if this was true it means a 17 year old could get insured on a cheap car fully comp and drive literally any car unless there are limits on this.

anyone know where i stand (i'm 17 btw)(y)

It will explicitly say on your policy if you're covered for 3rd party on other cars with owner's consent.

Well I assumed once you've got past the young persons excess all the restrictions drop. Spoke with DL recently to obtain a revised insurance certificate so that it finally stated I could drive any other vehicle third party and I'm 25.

I do believe there is a restriction, especially at 17. Your mate should:

a) Actually read his insurance certificate and see if it states "you're only covered for this vehicle" or "you're covered third party on other vehicles" (wording not exact!)

b) Check with his insurance company, they will confirm it within seconds.

Edit: DoH! Took so long replying, everybody else beat me to it :D

Even if they would allow it as an "add-on" the excess will be crazy!

well not really as he does 125 most of the way

We may as well buy him some flowers to put on the side of the road now, just hope he don't take anyone else with him when he does crash. (n)

It's one of the reasons why young people get hit so heavily with insurancee in the first place.

yeh true but he doesnt drive silly round the streets, this is on dual carriage way, not an excuse but its better than my mate who once done 95 in a 30 zone

It will explicitly sate or deny it on your policy....

however...

no policy will protect you from the cars owner when you write it off and they get didly squat for the pleasure!!

Stick with your own, try and get some experience, I still am after 7 1/2 years and just get the extra power when you can afford too :)

/OT - with regards to speeds, i'd never mention mine or a friends speed on a public forum bu 95 in a 30, the person deserves everything coming to them! Thats just way beyond the realms of sensibility!!

I can definatley say he won't have 3rd party other car cover, most if not all exceptions for this were removed, I'm 26 FC and can't drive other cars.

So get it sorted cos even if he don't crash it but someone hits him his Dad is gonna have a headache!
