This is an undercover documentary about the company I work for, below is some information about the company, I wish people were aware of this as it's the staff that get blamed for the current state of the company and not the government! ;)

Ok, I'll put it into perspective for you.

Royal Mail is supposed to be a Public Service and is obligated to posting to every household in the UK at least once a day. Now as a Government owned Public Service this has worked for years and everyone has been happy.

Now, over the last four years, the Government has said, we want to semi-privatise Royal Mail, we want to run it as a profit making business and not a public service, so this is what you have.

They tried to rebrand it Consignia in their bid to go into full privatisation, this was never accepted by the public , commerce or industry, after spending £5million on rebranding the stationary and just before they rebranded all the uniform and vehicles they did a u-turn, a big financial loss then???

They then spent £200million on fitting a system called Horizon into all UK Post Offices, which was supposed to simplify paying benefits to doleys and pensioners, after fitting Horizon, the Government said, we have a better idea, we'll pay these people directly into their bank accounts via BACS, we no longer need Horizon, this was of course after installing it. It now remains redundant and is not used, consequently Post Offices have been shut up and down the country because they are no longer required, and of course to save money. Another loss then???

Then they went on a venture to buy foreign Postal Services, they went crazy and snapped up a load for a high price, found that they could not make them profitable and sold them on at a loss of about £600million if my memory serves me well.

These losses have been unsustainable, so they brought in Alan Leighton and Adam Crozier. By the way in 1997 Royal Mail was making £800million in profit annually, by 2001 it was losing £1million a day, now when did NuLabour come to power???

Ok, back to Leighton and Crozier, they decided Royal Mail can be a lucrative business like Asda or football clubs, so in come their changes which have been:

To cut a postmans earning potential from £500 a week in 1999 if he did 20 hours overtime to £500 a week in 2004 but doing 30 hours overtime, the figures are not exact, but a guide, so the guys do longer hours for less pay. Their only perk is getting round the delivery as quickly as they can to get home earlier.

They decided that Royal Mail could deliver the same service by cutting 30,000 posties from 160,000 to 130,000 and yet the posties are expected to still give the same service.

Now they have decided to scrap the Second Delivery and they are nationally going to Single Daily Delivery, which to you means that the postmans delivery span has gone from 3 hours to four and a half hours because they've added another half of a delivery to each round from the guys deliveries they made redundant! The guys now also leave the delivery offices at 0900 (which means you can expect you mail anytime between 0900 and 1700) and not 0630 as before. They now have to endure 4 and a half hours in the rain, snow, etc. Oh, and if you pay an annual fee of £50, RM will try to get your post out to you before 0900.

Mail has been taken off the trains, this has failed miserably, the service has come to a standstill as the road freight systems can't cope with millions of items on a daily basis, so after getting rid of the eight mail trains they are now considering putting mail train back on! Another massive financial loss!

All of this has caused Royal Mail to provide a less than acceptable service since NuLabours rise, they have tried to make it a profitable commercial business and they are failing, it's a Public Service, full stop.

The postmen are demoralised, being paid less, being asked to do more and completely unappreciated. There is a massive culture at the moment within RM to sack permanent staff for sickness or attendance records and get in as many casuals from agencies to do the work. A lot of the casuals can't speak or read English as they are immigrants, and yet they are trusted to deliver your mail, but let's not forget, they are cheaper to employ, no sick pay, no holiday pay, etc.

I could go on about this for hours and do a full expose` but I guess you're getting bored with this now. My main point is don't blame the posties, all of this apathy, rebellion and demoralisation has been created by the Government, Allan Leighton and his mate Crozier and senior management. We are lucky that there haven't been massive postal strikes yet, but never say never!

Well said!

My biggest problem about semi-privatising the RM is that they somehow expect it to compete with other private companies yet remain shackled to the 'public service' constraints.

Either go 100% or don't! You can't have a private company that HAS to do stuff that others don't, that's just blatantly unfair!

It should remain a public service. Who else will be able to get something from one end of the country to the other for 28p?

I'm glad that someone appreciates the service!

You wouldn't believe the amount of business and residential complaints we currently receive on a daily basis and PostCOMM are going to hit us with some serious fines shortly for not achieving the standards they set.

RMs current figures for 1st class next day delivery at 28p is 90%, PostCOMM say it should be 92%, if they don't make these figures, they get fined millions of pounds! ???????????????????????

My only real beef with the postal service of late is the fact my post doesn't turn up till about 2pm these days where it used to be 8am, but you've explained that one above, so at least i now know who to be pissed off with.

Thats shock at TC making such a serious post;)

No, all joking apart, that is terrible, but makes me wonder how many uncovered scandals they are in our society[?]

You can always pay the £50 annual fee to assure your mail arrives before 9am, but even if you paid it, with the concentration of casual labour within our business at the moment I wouldn't guarantee it! :(

I can do serious if that's what you want James, but there's enough seriousness in the real world isn't there? As Steve C would say, we come on ere for a craic!

Yes it's stupid isn't it. As you say the post service was profitable and reliable and now it's struggling to be either because of stupid politicians. Unfortunately it's the same scenario elsewhere eg local government. Is it you that works for Royal Mail TC I'm sure I've read someone does...

I am really looking forward to this documentary. I agree that postpeople have a hard life (my best best friends mom is one and has low pay, early starts, silly targets timewise etc.) but this is no excuse for stealing. If I have a bad day on my job I don't nick morphine just to make me feel better. I know not everyone does this and I'm sure TC and most others are honest but they need to root out the bad guys and get rid of them as they are giving others a bad name. I also think the price you pay and the service you get is usually quite good, but round here busineses are told they can't get an early post even if they pay for it and bosses a the sorting office has suggested that if businesses want their post first thing in the morning they can go to the sorting office to collect it. Yes I can just se us all arriving at the office at 8.30 to get our post grrrrrrrrrrrrr. I would also find it helpful if my postman would start reading the name, address and postcode on my letters and post them to the correct house as I regularly get post with all three wrong so obviously not for me. I shall stop ranting now....

You should have read my first post (forgive the pun) the reason your letters aren't correctly read is that it's probably delivered by a Nigerian, Albanian, Kosovon, etc. And it's the same people who are doing the thiefing too! It's very difficult to employ honest, loyal and concientious staff under the current working conditions!

I must also add that it wouldn't suprise me if some of the regular staff were up to it too as low morale, no recognition and low pay will lead to these sorts of things going on.

Another point, how can you work for a government organisation, go out in all weathers delivering post, 5 or 6 days a week and if you do a flat 40 hour week you can claim family tax credits, yes, you work for the government and can still claim benefits, lot's of delivery staff do it, the mind boggles!

I did read most of your post twincamms....and I have to say that the postman here is english born and bred (there are relatively few immigrants here, unless you count the scots). There are low paid jobs everywhere where people have the chance to nick stuff (my shop staff for example were until recently on £4.50 an hour, could be working 10 hour days and have access to cash, controlled drugs etc. but don't feel they need to pinch them), obviously the conditions are letting them down but also recruitment needs to be addressed, why aren't they taking on decent people with a checkable working history? I know this isn't an issue for the average postperson on the street but this minority is affecting all of you and those who kow something dodgy is going on should make their feelings known. As to familt ta x credits, well they are legal and all above board so whatever my opinion on them then for the time being families are entitled to claim them.

I don't like the way you say that the thieves are immigrants...

On what fact do you base this on? When I watch this TV program on friday, are any of the thieves going to be other than English?

But you said:

"the reason your letters aren't correctly read is that it's probably delivered by a Nigerian, Albanian, Kosovon, etc. And it's the same people who are doing the thiefing too!"

Surely I am not mistaking you for saying that you are saying the thieves are immigrants?

Ok Paul , here we go, to be employed by Royal Mail you have to be screened, no previous convictions, no CCJs no outstanding fines or penalties, etc, etc, etc.

Let me give you a quick example, this is how stringent they are, if an employee is found not to have paid their TV License or Car Tax, they will be sacked, because RM is responsible for collecting this revenue you are considered to be thieving from the company, gross misconduct.

Agency and Casual staff are as and when and are subject to no such screening, I rest my case!

The people they employ nowadays aren't screened or acceptable, half of them cannot read or speak English and their personal hygiene needs attending to, they go out on the streets looking like poo, they don't even get a RM issued uniform, I see these type of casuals everyday so I'm talking from experience. Missing or 'lost' items have increased by 500% in the last two years, work it out yourself!

Points taken and accepted, I just wondered how you came to such a conclusion. So we are basically looking at casual staff being the problem, correct? How does your trade union react to all of this?

A mate of mine is a postie, and his girlfriend and I sympathise with the way you lot get treated. However, we get many letters for totally different streets, only the number is the same! Also I have had lots of post part opened and things missing, and thats from many different places I have lived, all English postmen too! Our post arrives as late as 3pm, but yesterday at 8.20 am!!!
