Welcome Poland to the EU

Sorry for the two new threads but having the news on has made me think of a second thing:

Can we all welcome my Grandfather's country to the EU from tomorrow please? It means I can much more easily visit it and should bring costs down if I would like to fly there

Considering some Fiats are built there, (correct?) it can't be a bad thing

I think they should all be welcome to join and enjoy the benefits like the breaking down of import tax barriers. What I'm not impressed with is the way Britain as a richer country puts more money into the ECC/EU than it gets out, just to support poorer countries. As it stands we will lose out further when the new countries join.

It is necessary for their prosperity in the long term though Dr Pepper - if they don't join they can't prosper from the relaxed trade rules that they will have. In the short term it's going to be a struggle and the fear of us being overrun with poor eastern europeans is a very real one. This is one of the arguments for a more federal EU with harmonisation on tax, welfare, imigration etc. Which BTW I am totally opposed to!

We pay £17 per person in the UK to subsidise other EU countries, not much really considering. DOn't you agree with sharing or are you greedy?[^] (only joking, understand it's a lot more complex!).

Oh and for the record, 4.8% of people in this country are foreign, compared with 6.9 for france, 8.9 for Germany and nearly 16% for US. Disclaimer: these figures are only remembered from BBC news tonight. I.e. they aren't stealing all our jobs.

No, I am just greedy

Point is our ancestors worked for where Britain is today, the new countries will get there naturally without ECC interference. (well that's the simplified view anyway)

This is a bad viewpoint; yes, we have been a world power in the past but we are so insignificant (1% of world's population, tiny, few natural resources), give it 50 years and you might be begging for a bigger communnity of countries to be part of.

I used to be against the EU, but I do a hell of a lot of travelling in Europe and its a far nicer place to be than the UK, so maybe its our own government thats messing us about and the EU could make it better!?[?]

I am currently watching BBC news about Poland joining, here are a few mad facts:

The Polish border will now cover 700 miles of the EU's flank.
Brussels spent 40million building a new border control centre
500metres down from this, the border is a dirt road without fencing
The poles have had to buy their own helicopters to cover the weak border
Hi-tech equipment is being used to track down illegals but this is impossible given the scale of the problem.

Basically, not attacking PL but attacking the stupidity of the EU to allow such an easy way for people smugglers to get in. I know PL has been working for 2 years to get over this border security problem, however, no one has helped them enough. If we could get a massive influx from Russia and beyond, this is where they could easily get in.
