Currently tooling round in a R-plate 85 elx....with 53k on it.....its not too shabby some areas that need work but lots of tax and mot decent tyres just serviced recently yadda yadda....overall pretty much mint...only had it since last september but unfortunately a friend of mine pointed out MK2 HGTs are down to 2 grand for cars with around 50k on em...i had planned at some point to tune the 85 and been saving up.....but if i sold it and used the money i had set aside for tuning it i could get an HGT (along with spare money for petrol and insurance).....just playing with the idea atm....don't need a new car....but I do seem to ragging the 85 more recently and wishing it was faster....So HGT, tuned 85?...(was thinking GT engine swap dunno what i love about the idea of a mentalist 5 door but i want one!) or leave them both be and get a nice 1080p capable tv or a holiday or summat....

there is a reason hgt are cheap no one can afford to run them, the better choice is the jtd remaped

remapped JTD, IG6 (cough) and 50mpg.

Oh might be slightly slower to 60, but more grunt going through the gears

Don't like the diesels....test drove a 52 plate JTD when looking for current car...it doesen't suit the character of the car, its torquey yes and tuneable but theres nowt quite like watching the rev counter pushing the bigger numbers as the car howls away, the diesel engine makes the car feel reluctant just because of the short rev range..that and it seemed like someone had perched a block of concrete on the bonnet...does nowt for killing understeer having a cast iron lump. Tho looked into HGTs and 25mpg does make my eyes water slightly. So more saving required i reckon!

yup, a resonably tuned 1.8 16v eats a lot of petrol, a lot more than turbo motors tend to (which incidently have huge amounts more power but mainly torque) despite they're lack of punch.

TBH if it were me, I would be....

bravo JTD, bravo HGT (cannot beat the 5pot howl if revving is your thing, the 4banger just doesn't cut it for the amount of petrol it consumes, sorry guys ), marea 2.4jtd 130, for when you need 5real seats, and a roof rack man enough for 6boats, a dog, and some bikes on the back aswell
