I've just changed a blown rear left tyre with the spare - do I need to go and get a wheel balance/alignment done? (I always get them mixed up, which one is which again?) Thanks in advance :)

Yep its a full size and I got it changed myself, so I'm assuming I should take it to a tyre shop and get them to balance it for me?

Out of curiosity is it bad if I don't get it balanced?

I've driven the car for about 20kms with the spare on - should I be concerned that I might have knocked the bearings out?

If your car steers straight and your steering wheel doesn't shake or vibrate when you're driving then it should be ok.

Had a look around the net and quite a few sources also recommends balancing the wheels if a new one has been put on. At the mo there aren't any vibrations, but it wouldn't hurt to get them balanced up; its only $44 and it could potentially save me from doing any damage later on. I might be wasting money but I like to be safe too :)

Yeah I'd be the same, just wasn't sure if your spare was already balanced or not. $44 is quite expensive though, it should only cost around $20-$30. They just take your wheels off, put them on a rotation machine and stick some weights on them.

Where are you getting it done?

The Bob Jane T Mart at Edgecliff. I remember getting one done a few years ago (or was it wheel alignment? Cant' remember..) and it was roughly the same price, but thanks for your reminder, I'll get some quotes and see if I can beat that (though I prefer if its somewhere local as I don't want to drive it with an unbalanced wheel for too long..).

If there is no steeering wheel shake you can just leave it. It's unlikely to damage your wheel bearings but can cause uneven treead wear round the tyre if it's badly out , I have only ever seen this once though and there a tyre well out of whack was left for too long(not by me) It's a good idea to get the tracking checked once a year or so, find somewhere you believe and stick to them. You can get some idea from the front tyres, are they toed in or out from tread wear feathered on inner or outer edge of tread blocks as you would expect, aslo if the car is toed out it will not self centre.

Well there's definitely no steering shake/vibration, and I can't see the wheel being out of line. So you're suggesting I should just leave it?

get it balanced, you only need to do the one, an that is only if it wast balanced when you had the tyre fitted

The new tyre/wheel is the original spare - does that mean its already balanced? Or am I missing the point here?

yeah that should be fine then:rolleyes:

Sorry to sound stupid, I admit I'm a novice!

To make it completely clear: the rear left tyre blew, so I took the wheel off and replaced it with the original spare, and at no time had I taken the tyre off the wheel. So, take the car to a tyre shop and get the wheels balanced or not?
