Getting quite a few complaints now about various Snitz bits :) - tbh i dont think its a host problem, more snitz itself.

I'm therefore looking for an alternative (this is gonna be horrible, i dont even want to imagine the import routines :D) - so far vBulletin seems to stick out as one of the best, it does cost, but could be worth it?

Anyone else used any / have any favourite software?

Also, bear in mind I need to learn PHP, so anything that requires massive changes will not be too appreciated :)

But basically, so far, vBulletin supports:

Everything *base* snitz does
Photo attachment to posts
Calender (with recurring, etc)
Search that works (the main reason I'd be switching actually)
Upload avatars
FAQ system
Supports style sheets all the way through (so file sizes a lot smaller = quicker)

Downside is you have to pay for it, but its not too bad, about £80 i think...

Any other ideas?

Ben, just so you know, the current forum is the best layout and thread system etc. that I have used.....

I think this forum is great as it is:D. Couldn´t someone just write a side program to search, it is just a database after all;).

yeah i agree with paul - i have been on a few forums and i am not just saying that but i think this forum is the best one not just because of what it is but also the layout is clear and easier to use, my boss at who uses another forum for his car;) thinks the layout of this forum is much better than the forum he uses[8D]:D

Well layout wouldn't change, it should in theory look exactly the same as this one....

Try http://www.djsource.co.uk for an example....

If that theory is correct and improvements were made in other areas, then i'm all for it I guess. I just wanted to voice the fact that the layout/the way it all works on this forum is by far the best I have used.

Ben you might want to consider Invision Board, it's cheaper than vBulletin I think too. V2 is looking very nice as well (we have it running on the kiwihosting support forum).

BTW I've been converting lots of Snitz forums lately to Invision, PHPBB and vBulletin so I'd be happy to do this all for you once/if you make a decision to move.

As for the speed of the forum, I honestly can't find a heck of a lot wrong, I've made a few tweaks which seem to have made it a little faster but still can not find any explanation for the odd time where people quote they are getting timeouts or pages "stalling". I haven't given up looking though !

If it is better i´m all for it:D.

Donations should cover it :)
Found an unbranded license for sale (removes all the vBulletin references) for $185 - (thats a $100 saving) - gonna keep hunting though :)

By all accounts, everyone seems to be raving about it, and Kiwihost has very kindly offered to upgrade it all for me :)

I like http://phpbb.com/

Used it before, not with this many users tho! But I like it! And I'm ok with PHP, so can sometimes get my head round whats going on, but there is a lot of code there!! :D

Punto Sporting 16v MK2, Abarth Kit, Abarth Alloys, GMax AirFilter, Angel Tuning, ICE Install, Plus other bits

Looked at that too, but liked the idea of paid support... and the fact it does seem to be the best out there...

Just awaiting confirmation of the license and I can get started :) admittedly it will look crap to start with, but once i get used to it all, it will mirror this one.. :D

There seems to be plenty of support from their community and there are also plenty of mods available, and styles :D

Yeah, but i'd also say the same about snitz...

TBH, its the blindingly fast search routine that is kinda tipping the balance... and the fact that its just so damn awesome :) - haha...

Well, a test version will be installed over the next few days (with a data import), i'll pm a few of you to check it out, see what you think...

If it's all good, then I'll buy the license and move everything over :)

in the meantime, you can check it out and see what it can offer here:

Personally I'd recommend Invision board or PHPbb... They are both damn good, and PHPbb is free too [8D] and so easily customisable for designs... I've used it on my site... Plus you can get hacks that add extra features... Photo galleries etc :D

Take a look http://www.elitemonkey.net/forum

If you need any help with anything I can help... Spent quite a bit of time with this sort of stuff... Even hoping to set up my own web hosting company :p
