I'll be taking out insurance soon and currently have no mods on the car. I'm thinking of putting some alloys on (probably about 1-2 months into the policy) and was wondering whether it would be cheaper to declare them when I take the policy out (to save on the admin fee charged for any changes to the policy) rather than ringing up the insurers later on when they'll probably charge me the fee.

The company will just replace modified parts with standard ones, so basically if I were to make a claim when I had alloys declared (but hadn't actually got them on) would an insurance company be reluctant to pay out/void my policy or anything because my car would not be as described?

I've heard things about companies not paying out when mods have not been declared but what about the other way round?

Cheers.

lol i dont think they would pay for items on the car, otherwise i would declare 22" spinners costing £5k, 7 x 12" flatscreens, dvd touchscreen monitor, 8 subs and crash my cinqy so i get like £10k payout :p

seriously though, i doubt they would as you have to declare exactly how the car is at all times.. and they probably could invalidate your insurance if you declared mods and they werent on it...

It depends upon the insurer.
Some will replace like-for-like, so if you've declared those mods, they'll pay out for them.
Some will only replace on a standard basis, so you declare those mods, and they'll pay out to rpelace with standard items.

Insurers who do the former generally cost more than the latter. You pays your money and you takes your pick.
Elephant fall into the second category BTW.

One slight problem Craig - they inspect the car before any payout so I don't think that'd work :p
