Hi Everyone :)

i was parked up earlier today with my missus when a car was coming from behind me and i knew he was gonna clip my mirror:mad: the inevitable happened so i beeped angrily and made a note of his/her number plate on a scrap of paper. the car in question knocked the plastic painted bit on the top of the mirror off, and it is now a bit scratched and scuffed. the accused appeared to stop but when i drove on a little bit he/she obviously hadn't and were now gone. :bang:

My dilemma is do i report this to the police or let it go? im hoping the scratches may polish out but i'm dam annoyed they didnt stop.

If you beeped, and made it obvious that a collision had occoured then the police should investigate for at least "failing to stop at the scene of an accident", and "failing to report an accident to insurance"

Phone up the police on the non-emergency number and ask for advice.

When I had a minor ding in the tipo (black one) I followed, beeped, signaled, waved and stopped at a junction. The person drove past so I followed him home. Turned out to be an old italian guy who was just having a hard time. Everything sorted over a large glass of Retsina Lemon liquer :D

Doesn't sound like much, i'd have followed them and asked for £20 myself. Don't think the police would be too interested but it might prompt her to make contact and put her hand in her pocket.

If it were me I wouldn't bother though.

As I figured with my recent bash on the bumper, it's the principle of the thing. They hit your car, caused damage and didn't stop. Now had they stopped and apologised then fair enough, let it go. But they didn't - they knew they had damaged your car and still drove off. So go after them!

TBH, I would just let it go. It's annoying, yes, but IMO its more trouble than its worth, even though there may have been an offence caused :(

i would then have reported him to police saying he stank of ale and had him breathalised!

Don't bother mate, the police will probably want to see all your documentation and may give your ride the once over for faults, they're lazy barstewards and are always looking for an easy cop.(n)

thats a bit harsh! when involved in an accident of any sort EVERYONES documents will get checked end of.
the fact that its such a minor incident will mean its not likely to be chased due to resources, it would be a whole different matter if the incidnt was larger such as more damage involved etc. Trust me when I say its not about lazyness, its about resources and priorities!

Hit the nail on the head there.

it would be great if there were lots of resources but sadly due to lack of resources, the priorities will be on what the government sees as more serious

Hey 007, You should have gone to 'Specsavers' cos those rose tinted ones you're wearing aint doing you any good, 'resources and priorities' is just a soundbite, either you're one of the plod or you're very inexperienced with matters on the street, 12 coppers, 2 motorbikes, 1 red+white and 1 meatwagon doing roadside checks every 3 weeks at the same location i don't see as a priority, getting 1 copper to respond to compaints of stolen quad bikes/motorbikes driven by 8-16 year olds racing in a 20mph urban street 'is'.

Hey listen, it ain't their fault, they're only human doing a job, and as such take the easy option most of the time, i'll quote what a copper told me " If you think i'm going to chase those little darlings around the streets in this Peugot think again", NUFF SAID .......

the roadside checks is likely to have been done by a specific unit dedicated to that. This does NOT take away resources away from other areas such as response teams and general duty teams etc. When you understand how the system works and how resources are deployed then you can see where the problems are, but sadly not a lot can be done on street level. What can be done is people understanding we try to do as much as we can but there are limitations! :)

Ok guys, handbags away. If you want to have a debate about the dialemmas of modern policing please do it in the Leisure Lounge, or by Private Message.

"Any more of this nonsense, and you'll both be nicked"

Lol... I always wanted to say that :D

Yeah you're right Alex, lets get back to 'JTD's original post and question ...... "should i report it to the police" ? well i gave him the answer as i see it, JTD don't yet realise it but as a motorist he is 'public enemy number one' and as such should try to have as little to do with the plod as possible.
