As above. Someone ran into the back of me today when I was driving a hire car from work.

The other driver admitted responsibility and I informed the hire car company and it's insured through work.

My question is do I have to tell my insurance company or a future one of this accident?

Depends upon the wording of your current / future policy wording, but normally you do.

Declaring it now is far, far cheaper than having your insurer reject a claim and/or cancelling / voiding your policy later.

If they cancel or void your policy it's a life sentence, declarable for the rest of time. We've all been asked the question "have you ever had....", right? You can imagine how difficult it would be to find insurance then!

I know you've got a slightly obscure set of circumstances, being as you're insured through a work policy on a hire vehicle, but typically when you contact the insurer to advise them of an accident they will tell you in no uncertain terms that it is declarable, if indeed that is the case.

As M.E.P quite correctly points, cheapest insurance isn't necessarily best and it can come back to bite you on some things later, like cancellation or amendment fees or the service you get in the event of an accident / claim and exactly what they will cover.
