I have a Fiat Scudo Combi which is listed on the registration document as a diesel car, has 5 seats, and the body type is van/side windows. In fact it has windows all round. I cannot get a quot for car insurance because every insurer, when given the number, says it is a van! It is no bigger than a People Carrier.

The problem with van insurance is that it does not allow me to drive someone else's car with their permission on my insurance, and that can't be added on. It may have advantages - for example 3 months European cover included - but I can't compare it with car insurance because I can't get any quotes.

I wrote to the DVLA but have to fill in a form and send £5 before they will answer anything.

Any thoughts, please?

Whats the reg number? Its down to the type aproval the vehicle has been registered as when new normally (and could be if it was purchased as VAT qualifying when new, so may have been registered as a commercial vehicle.

If you want to post your reg I can check it on my phone app I've got for you if it'll help?

Thanks for that! The Registration Document says it's M1, which is car. Now, do you think I should try to get it changed by the DVLA, or will car insurance not be much different to van insurance? Advice needed!

No worries, insurance databases will probably be using the same system that app of mine does, hence them all insisting its a van.

I'd write / call the DVLA, explain the situation and confirm the logbook says M1 (which as you say is car) but these databases that feed off of the DVLA seem to say N1, and see what they say.

They may be able to update something, or you may have to fight with each insurance company and tell them their system is wrong and that if they want, if you get a quote as a car and then take the policy out you can send them a copy of the V5C to prove this if they're unwilling to take your word.

Thanks - but can I assume car insurance will be cheaper? I would expect it to be! Maybe if not I can contact DVLA again, say I've taken out the seats and want to use it as a van!!

Hi, we can quote this as a car for you and give you the Driving Other Cars extension plus EU driving cover that you're looking for. The certificate will show the vehicle type as a van though (is that an issue?).

best,
Nick
