Hi there!
I haven't passed my test but own a "W Reg" 2000 1.2 Fiat Punto (automatic).

At the moment I am paying circa £100 a month for fully comp Learner driver insurance (had this for two months)

Anyway I have my test booked for the first week of next month and I have been looking around for quotes for a rough "guesstimation" of what I am expecting to pay..

I was pretty shocked from what I've seen £4400 fully comp (with my dad as a name driver who has 9+ years NCB) and £3400 for third partyFT.

I knew it would be expensive but I was hoping for a max cap of £2500! I don't really know what to do because I've only owned the car two months and I don't want to have to get rid of it because of the insurance.

I live in the Nottingham (NG5) area and I'm 20 years old (male) I'm going for an automatic licence and not a manual!

Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks for any help in advance

Well when starting off its best to get a car after getting prices for the car. Unfortunatly statistically punto's are notorious for high insurance prices regardless of the engine size. not much else you can really do :(

I did thats why I got it and saw that I believe maybe ASDA had insurance for £2,400 but that's now long gone! :(

Have a look at the companies that fit a tracker to your car, can't remember the names (insure the box?), can't drive between 11pm and 6am/7am though I believe, and only 6,000 miles a year. But believe they are cheap.

See about another car for the first year? sucky i know but all i've seen is puntos are just explosive for insurance prices, frankly them prices are utter s***.

My first car @ 18 was a 1.0 Nissan Micra K11 and i paid 1600 insurance fully comp for that little bit of kit, was happy.

Ikube is one of the above posters reccomendation companies.

iKube is one of the tracker ones, not limited on miles but you can't drive between 11pm and 5am, they don't track your driving except for if you stop suddenly and it creates over a certain G, in which case they ring you, and if they cant get hold of you they call the police

Insure the box is also tracked, limited on mileage not time, you get a set amount when you buy the policy (6000 I think), then anything over that you have to buy at around 20p a mile, they also give miles for free for good driving eg not speeding, not pulling away too quckly etc

im paying 3 and a half grand at liverpool victoria a year and i have no nbc yet , unfortunatly you have to just bite the bullet, im only driving a 1.2 8v aswell, only liverpool victoria would quote me under 4 grand i beleive its because of where i live, puntos have risen quite a bit in recent years.

but the sooner you get your nbc under your belt the better.

if you wait untill your say 25, your still going to be paying quite a bit because of no nbc.

like said above maby think about a box that only lets you drive within certain hours. but when i got quotes when i first passed my test, there was only 100 quid difference from normal insurance to the box.

it all depends where your car idles on a night and if its in a garage driveway etc and what postcode you have if the area is big on car crime or not and how good your security system is on your car and how much you drive it.

car insurance is only going to go up so if you can aford to get on with it i would surgest you do , if not try hold off for a few years and see if its any better

Sorry I haven't replied in a while guys, been terribly busy! I have managed to get a quote for £2400 but It's gotten me thinking if I can get it any cheaper on another car, does anyone have a clue what automatic car would get me cheaper insurance? or an ideal first car, the only problem is the auto transmision!

Thanks for any help guys, it's much appreciated!
I live in Nottingham NG5 area.
