Re: How to get cheap insurance?

Hi Josh. I have a lot of sympathy. My daughter was 18 when she passed and I felt really bad about landing massive bills on her because I forced her to learn - it was mandatory but having said that once she had her license I didn't care if she never drove again. She has my Yaris which is a small engine size and I must tell you this all happened 3 months ago before anyone tells you it is illegal. I rang my insurance company and they did the following.
They kept me as the owner of the car and her as named driver and then charged me 87 per month. They then told me I could not use my no claims for my new car (sciento) but the cost of that all in (legal, etc) was only about 240 which I paid up front. I know people will say that I was mad threatening my no claims but the no claims protection on the Yaris stands because I own the car. Not every young driver is a speed freak. So Josh I own 2 cars and she has use of one of them and she is building up her no claims this way. I use Privledge. It doesn't matter to her that she doesn't own the car just that she has one.

Doesn't make it not illegal. Are they company insuring the Yaris aware that your daugter is the main driver and you own and drive another car regularly?

There's only a couple of companies who allow named drivers to build NCB & many NCBs expire with the premium - I believe Privilege expires within 7 days. You may find that other companies don't recognise this NCB as you can be a named driver and never drive, so having maximum NCB without touching the wheel since passing your test
Also, what MEP is saying is that you could be seen as fronting for your daughter.

I'd be interested to know just how an insurance company decides at what point the named driver becomes the main driver.

I work in Car/Home Insurance and this IS fronting and is illegal. Chances are if something happens to this vehicle it will void your policy and could end up getting an IN10 to boot, then you really will complain about insurance prices. I work for a large insurer and we do not accept NCB unless you are the regular driver of the policy and a lot of other big companies run this policy too. Funny thing is that its situations like this that cause the price of insurance to rise each year, 1 accident and boom, no-one to claim off for the other party you hit so THEY have a fault accident with no fault of their own. People need to do their research before buying cars and buy accordingly.

Re: How to get cheap insurance?

All insurance is on the basis of what the law calls "utmost good faith". Provided the insurers were truthfully told ALL the details about who will drive the car, who owns it and all the rest of the stuff they need to know, it is not fronting.

I see a lot of no insurance cases in court that are very similar to this one, the reason they end up in court is because they didn't tell the whole truth.

Re: How to get cheap insurance?

Ello Josh. I was in the same position as you, but with mingling every night I have got my Insurance down to 2400, on a 56 Grande Punto, and guessing by your name you are looking to be getting the same car.

The best tips I can give you is...

Going on Moneysupermarket.com ... its the best website for comparison for younger people like me and you.

Try getting an older version of a car... Like instead of getting an 09 Grande Punto, get a 56 one. This will knock off at least 400 - 600 easily.

Pass Plus, yep good idea... but Its only a few hundred it takes off from experience of doing it too.

Fitting an Alarm and Tracking device to the car (costs maybe 200) but will knock off maybe double in a quote.

Try the 1.2 Active version of a Punto, its the cheapest insurance or the 1.4 Sporting Active.

Dont go with Ikube or what ever its called... You get a GPS fitted to your car so you dont go over your monthly miles quote and time quote... if you do so, under the contract you are fined 60... and its like 40 pence every mile you go over. Its pointless...

Try Multicar Insurance, this knocked off around 800 for me...

I am an expert at getting insurance down, as I like do it every night!! hahaha

If you want any more help just message me

Challenge Accepted.

Also, just did a wee experiment there, a large chunk of the price is where you live...

Bishopton - Where I Live - 1.4 Punto Grande Sporting 56 plate = 2400
Paisley - Where I dont live and has more crime and violence = 3450

Just over 1000 more... Pft!

Just spent some time doing my quote there with and without pass plus.

Insurance Quotes were with same car, same location and same specifications. Car = 1.4 Grande Active

Comprehensive -

Without Pass Plus - 5976.24
With Pass Plus - 5976.24
Raw Saving - 0
Actual Saving - MINUS 113 ( for price of pass plus test )

-----

3rd F&T

Without Pass Plus - 2836.33
With Pass Plus - 2836.33
Raw Saving - 0
Actual Saving - MINUS 113 (113 Price for Pass Plus)

For me it actually put an extra 113 price onto the total amount of money I pay for my car.

You say pass plus has cost you money but have forgotten to take into account the other benefits it's done for you

What are those benefits. The only benefit I can imagine from getting it is cheaper insurance. Other than that, to me its defunct, unless it has any other advantages.

Re: How to get cheap insurance?

It taught you things you would have learned out on the road anyway, so yeah, I agree, if you're past the age that it makes any difference to your insurance (as I was when I was learning) then it's not worth it. 3 years and no accidents in my case, only claim I've made is for a chipped windscreen, 130 would just have been money down the toilet for me too.

Re: How to get cheap insurance?

I saved around 450 from doing pass plus, and didn't have to pay for it so even better!
