If, like me, you turn one year older just before your policy expires, please for the love of God, only get quotes AFTER your birthday.

My policy was due to renew 9 days after my birthday, and my renewal quote was £600. My comparethemarket etc. quotes weren't much better. I set the renewal date to the 26th, 9 days (17th) after my birthday.

Now, fast forward to today, (21st), and I put in the exact same information again, the only thing that has changed is that I am now actually 22, and low and behold, I managed to get it down to £460.

Top tip!

No idea why it's like this, maybe a broker can shed some light? Surely if your renewal date is after your birthday they should take that in to account instead of only applying it after you actually go up a year. Must be making a killing on this little secret.

Think this is common sense for alot of younger drivers, once I turn 21 all insurance for 'silly' cars drops like a lead weight, but my issue is i passed my test 4-5 months before my 18th birthday. Cant really afford to not drive during that period but does mean i can save up and get a new car after my 21st :)

Yes, but if your policy doesn't begin until after you've turned whatever age why don't they take this in to account? There's no difference at all. Obviously it won't affect the people who's birthdays are nowhere near their renewal date but if it's within a month, I know most people like to get this out of the way quickly so they don't forget, they must be losing hundreds of pounds!

For my last renewal it was due 1 day before i had passed my test for 2 years, so i waited till after that had passed and that made it drop quite a lot so again, if the date you passed is after the renewal i recommend waiting till after it has passed
