Just commented in a thread where someone was boasting about going on their parents insurance illegally and thought I'd make a thread about what I was advising in the comment.

I suggest to the young drivers (17-18) to go with ikube, In my case it saved me around 3 grand on insurance as I was getting quoted 4-5 grand at the cheapest and ended up getting it for 1.3 grand.

BEFORE you start commenting saying that its crap as it ties you down, don't because in my case it doesn't, I don't work after 11 pm and there is no other reason that I need to be out after that time, if I really wanted to go out after that time I would pay ikube 100 pound to do so, it's much better than paying an extra 3 grand in the first place.

when your with ikube your car can't move after 11pm and before 5 or 6 am so if you do need to go out after 11pm you simply can't go with ikube, but if you don't need to I think you should consider going with ikube(the quotes are free) ... Ikube also builds up your no claims bonus, which is already better than fronting imo besides the fact that if you crash whilst fronting your most likely to get bent over.

Like you say, works for you so fair enough, but what works for one might not work for another. Luckily my insurance has never cost anywhere near that, equally though even if I never did need to travel out of hours I'd hate that restriction.

It's like being without a car, I lent my car to my sister when I knew I wouldn't need it, but the feeling of knowing it wasn't there to be able to use, even though I didn't need it, is awful imo, and isn't to disimilar to your predicament, but fair play if your happy with it and it saves you a fortune then all is good (y)

i dunno if i would like the restriction, what if i had to take someone to a&e after 11 or something, i doubt they will save much on my current insurance anyway :)

personally i think experience should be gained in miles not years

I think in case's like that there will be a loop hole

its like if you've got an emergency case - like someone is bleeding really really bad from like a savage saw or dog attack, you can legally speed, as in court i was told they wont hold it against you
PLEASE do correct me if this is wrong

So in IKube situation, a hospitial form saying you were a driver and there was a genuine situation where someone needed medical attention, then yea The insurance should just ignore it :)

if you are 17-18 and dont go out after 11pm you dont deserve to be young

? I can still go out after 11pm... just not in my car :L ... for me it was either go on ikube or have no car at all this year and I didn't fancy that, I can still go out after 11pm, the gps is fitted on the car, not me.
I started this thread to advise the young drivers who are thinking of fronting that there are alternatives to cheap insurance, that's all

I'm afraid not, they have put on the ikube website that if you do need to go out in the "red zones" then you do have to pay the fine of £100 but I'm okay with that, if I do need to take it out in case of an emergency the way I look at it is I'd have to pay £100 for that emergency instead of paying the extra £3000 insurance

Ikube is a very good idea, it sounds the same as marmalade insurance (Another policy of the same type.)

While it works for some people, and is currently the best way to insure during the day, night times is one of the best times for young drivers, so i can understand why people get grief.

I was very lucky to get fully comp on my 1.0 micra for 1600, but dam i won't be getting good quotes like that again!

Thanks for post :)

It works sometimes but very rarely.

You would have to be able to prove that phoning an ambulance and giving first aid while you waited for it to arrive would have been so dangerous to the injured person that it was safer for him or her to be driven to hospital in excess of the speed limit, by a driver not trained to do so,in an unmarked car with no blues or twos.

Bear in mind that in an ambulance the injured person would get expert attention with a wide range of emergency drugs and equipment available, both before and during the journey. A normal car does not have that sort of equipment.

Ive found TESCO car insurance to be the cheapest! they quoted me £1094! fully comp!! Thats for a 1.4 16v fiat grande punto sporting! that was atleast £2000 cheaper than other insurance companys! im 20 and been driving for almost 2 years.

These policies are a great incentive to keep the idiot and inexperienced kids indoors at night and I considered one of these policies when I first passed to keep my costs down but it really wasn't all that cheaper compared to "normal" insurance companies.

I'd have major issues with big insurance companies telling me when I can and can't use my car, where I can go and what speed I go at.

I have two cars and have just insured both of them in the same week. My 1.2 Stilo was £1400 to insure with Admiral and my 2.0 4x4 was £900 with Aviva. Doesn't make sense that my 4x4 is cheaper despite it being so much bigger and more powerful. Yet, iKube quoted £1900 for my 1.2 Stilo.

Had a quote for one of my boys, £1600 with this device fitted down from over £4000 on a 1.2. Yes the hours are slightly restricted but most people that age are in the pubs anyway and shouldn't have their cars with them.
Great idea if you ask me.
