First post here... Ive been browsing a bit and decided to post this..

I'm 18, own a black 1.2 punto standard, and i managed to wittle my insurance down to £729...

Heres how:
Instead of using my dad with full no claims, i changed it to my mam being the main driver and policy holder etc.. i put me as second driver. I did this through Aviva's website and managed to get this policy on the go.

A few mates have been getting £1000 and £800 for clio's etc.. worth a try guys!

Thanks.

Oh yeah, never read the full thread, don't do that - if you use the car more than them (which can be easily checked when you have an accident and the police find another car insured with your mother as the main/only driver) you will get screwed!

I knew about this beforehand... Thanks for the links though, but i can't afford £2000 insurance as stated in the links.. I really need a car though, i go to work, 6th form and have a girl "friend" 20 miles away , i've spoken to my parents about it and it's sorted..

yeah your gonna get done for fronting unless you very careful

Esp if they find out your practically bosting about it as well

Some companies do checks around to see what your like, so say you've video's on your facebook - and they see you pulling donuts in a car park= Oh dear :(

Get yourself on the insurance as the main
BEHAVE! for god sake its not hard! Keep your distance, keep your wits, dont be stupid! Think before you act (unless its Emergency Stop - then dont think, just Slam your anchors on!!)

Only way to get your prices down is to show them that your a good driver!
Behave for 4 years, and on the 5th year get the noclaims protected and your off!! :)

The whole named driver thing is ridiculas anyway - does anyone actually know anyone thats a named driver and uses the car an equal amount or less than the main driver? The majority are doing it for cheap insurance and the price difference between being named and being main is becoming less and less.Insurance companies are getting wise to it - they KNOW you're the main driver, they just cant prove it until they investigate after you try to claim.

The main problem with it is you dont build your own no claims so you'll never benefit from the discounts. You'll just get stuck in a rut and having to use your parents to keep the same quotes, eventually you'll have to bite the bullet and get your own policy so you might as well do it now.

I was a named driver as it saved around £400 a year in my first few years of driving. The problem was I was 22 and still a named driver, started getting quotes and there was no difference in being a named driver or having my own policy - they were both stupidly expensive. Last year I bought a TT, could I insure it with 1 years no claims being under 25? NOPE! Had to have atleast 2 years no claims which I would have had if I hadnt been a named driver for so long. Ended up paying the absolute earth for it, as I was seen as inexperienced.

I honestly think its not worth it, overall you're better off with your own policy!

Just my 2p!

yeah thanks people, but as i said i CANNOT in any way afford my own policy, i don't know anyone who can at my age. And i drive sensibly.. i don't do donuts in car parks and video it .....

My lad tried that when we gave him the OH's old polo, her name was on the paperwork & he could get cheaper insurance as a named driver but when I found out I went ballistic & told him to man up. If he wanted to drive, he had to pay the insurance & the car was changed to his name, he ended up paying £2k rather than 8 or £900.
His excuse? Well, all his mates do it.
I told him, tell me who they are then... because if I find out I'm reporting them.
I'm sick and tired of paying out ever increasing premiums when I've never had an accident & it's the honest motorist who is paying the extra so the muppets can save themselves a few bob by fronting.

well then your mum is gonna have to be classed the main driver on your car and you will have to put the car ownership to her name, she cant have her name as a main driver for another car and then you cant drive the car more then her

thats the only legal and safe way of doing it

and as said you wont build up your own no claims so all pretty pointless

If you can't afford to run a car then stay off the roads until you can.
Not being able to run a car is no excuse for fronting & forcing everyone else's premiums up.
And BTW, if you do have a prang & the insurance investigate & find you do drive more than your mum, SHE'll be hauled through the courts as well & liable for a huge fine, possibly prison.

To be honest, she has drove more than me so far considering i got it on thursday, so technically the insurance is valid... I understand all the stuff about putting your premiums up, but i'd rather be a sensibe driver on the road than not have a car at all, as it's needed, i didn't do 45 driving lessons and sit a test for no reason..

Well at least cover your back - if the insurance is in your mum's name, make sure the car is registered to her as well, will look better if anything does happen, plus a lot of insurance companies insist that the vehicle is registered to the policy holder.
