How to insure for a 17 year old?

our intention now is that the car will be in general use by myself, my wife and my son. We're all going to use it. It won't be modified in any way, so I can't see that it should present a problem.
Will your son be the main driver?
will he drive it more often than any other driver?
will he have priority over other drivers? ie will he be able to say he needs the car for work/college/football etc in which case mum or dad take another car.

If the answer is YES to any of those he will be the main driver and the premium will be based primarily on the risk he poses.
If the answer is NO to any of those it is likely that the insurers will not consider him to be the main driver.

You need to be aware that lots of parents don't tell the insurers all the little details in order to keep the premiums down. However clever the scam or however innocent the omission, the insurance companies have seen it all before and don't hesitate to void cover where the law allows them to do so.

If you go to your local magistrates court on a day when they are dealing with motoring offences it is becoming more common to see a young driver and one of his parents in the dock, jointly charged with making false statements to obtain motor insurance. That can end up with both of them getting a record for an offence of dishonesty. Which can really screw up your credit rating and job prospects.

Sit down with the family and work out EXACTLY how you want the car to be used. Then tell the insurers EVERYTHING. You might get a bigger premium that way but at least you get valid insurance.

I second that. Had exactly the same experience with DL - they were the cheapest when I first passed, come renewal I found they were no longer that competitive.

I third that, Went Direct Line, then to Churchill on my 95 Clio then my 99 Punto. Now Driving a 05 Civic Sport (Vivid Blue Pearl :slayer:) (Nearly got a Hyundai Coupe, [they are death traps!]) I'm only 20, so I expect to pay about £1200, with mum and dad on as named drivers, 3 years NCB and 3 Points for SP30 renewal in October.

The focus is Group 6. so it's not in the lowest bracket for insurance for young drivers.

Try getting a cheap 206, 1.1 with you as a named driver, my mates paid about £1100 about three years ago.

He can buy something better once he has NCB

I had a 1.2 Clio and nearly lost my licence doing 40 in a 30, in a 1.6 I would of probably doing 50. Hammer home, a car carries a lot of responsibility

Just my view hope this helps

Direct line will give you ncb as a named driver (I have been a named driver on my mums policy and have now got 2 years ncb with direct line) I had it for 700 as an extra to add me on as a named driver.

I would definitely recommend you do the same, you save a bomb!

But iirc its only recognised by themself ;)

So no good if they give you a silly price :p

1.6 probably aint the best thing to try and insure for a 17 year old... but with you on as the main driver, it'd probably be around £1k if you searched hard enough.

Should have put your parents on it instead if possible.

I too have my girlfriend with provisional on my insurance! It dropped mine from a £2400p/a to £2k. This is still extortionate but for about 2 months before i passed my test i was on this several hours a week. Parents dont seem to help on insurance at all really, my mum has 6yrs no claims and dropped mine by £10 a year. Also be careful if he intends to pay monthly as until he's 18 its unlikely he'll be able to.. I had this problem also, from eCar it was going to cost £1600(ish) on a 1.1 1994 punto!:bang: I went to pay the deposit but with me being under 18 my only option was big lump sum. Instead I opted for an unusual policy. They automatically renew it monthly and I can cancel at anytime but with the same company its £2000p/a (£170 a month). But just bear that in mind if your son doesn't have a lump sum figure to play with and has to base it on his monthly/weekly wages...

been there got the t shirt,3 boys all have cars I admit I have in the past put our name on the car ownership and let them be a second driver,I would never ever do this again, the thing is its illeagal and if you are found out you are up the creek without a paddle, son drove the car over a bollard as it was coming back up!!!,2.5k cost to repair lost no claims!,so let them get there own insurance the first car should be something like a 900cc seicento or similar, the problem now is these young kids are driving powerful vehicles because the parents are paying the price,as main drivers when they are not,we have just bought an audi 20tdi sportback for the son which he will be paying us back for,his insurance was 3k but when he is home the his mother sometimes uses the car so she is the second driver and its come down to 2.3k so a good saving, but its better for them to understand money does not grow on tree's, don't fiddle the insurance you will get burnt!!!!

Quinn insurance are great for young drivers, im 18 myself, when i 1st passed my test i had a 2.0 HDi 306 =) ... insurance was around 2k for the 1st year, 2nd year, (bearing in mind i just gained 1 years no claims) they put the price UP to 3k =/ ... so sold the 306, bought a GPS :) and now with Quik Fit insurance, =) ... but would reccomend Quinn for year one, most of my mates used them too with no problems
