Does a stripe affect insurance?

Of course you do. A stripe is renound for adding at least +10bhp so it is classed as a performance modification. Stupid question imo!

what about if your car has air con optional.

do you pay less for having less power some of the time?

pretty sure you don't have to declare anything unless it's been changed from how it was originally sold.

and anyway i'm not telling insurers everytime i change my brake pads to those of a different manufacturer, who may have a slightly different compound.

or declaring that a car has had a new kwikfit exhaust which may or may not be freer flowing.

Alloys being non standard, yes tell them. manufacturer fitted stripe, no!

WTF I was joking

WTF I was joking

i was too ;) in a way.

the bit about air con was definitely a joke! hence following on from your quote about increase in power.

but the point is as soon as a car is sold from a manufacturer it is likely to get changed allbeit slightly in most cases. and if you buy that car secondhand you may not know of the slight changes.

Thing is, YOU might have been joking BUT there are muppets out there who will add a stripe then drive their car as if they are stunt doubles in the Dukes of Hazzard.
In fact, (going back a long time) I know a guy who bought a set of musical air horns to emulate the ones fitted to the General in the dukes of Hazzard. He would then drive everywhere as if he was being pursued by the police (as per the telly) & sound his air horns every so oft.

Only the other day i was sat behind a right old heap. The lad had painted a couple of white lines over the top - badly, he'd added a crappy spoiler on the hatch (so it acted like a brake!) and he'd glued a couple of badges to the back - 'sport' and 'turbo'.
And, bless, he tried to pull away quickly but the old shed just couldn't cope.

Something in that article doesn't add up;

but;

The car was in her name so she could insure it as hers & put son on as a named driver.
but named does not mean main driver.

I'm guessing investigators found it strange that a middle-aged woman would drive thousands of miles in a chavmobile whilst her son would only use it for high days and holidays.
They've looked at all the mods and said ' this is so obviously his car'.
And also the fact that not a single mod had been declared - did she even know he'd done all those mods?

I dont think that would really wash as an excuse. My parents dont like my Stereo equiptment but they let me keep it in their House. Just the same that a Mother could say that their Son likes to modify cars as a Hobby. Seeing as he has a limeted access to the Car she lets him use that to practice his hobby. When it go's too court circumstantial whims wont count for anything.

Hobby or not, they still should have been declaired ;)

And if your stereo equipment is worth anything, your parents will have to notify their insurance company - or take a chance on not being robbed.
My household insurance covers up to £500 for computers - So I'm ok, but then both my lads have their own lappy - which has to be covered for being taken away from the house. Youngest has a penchant for downhill bike something & jumping (something or other) so his bike is worth about £800 - an additional premium on the insurance. I have a £1k camcorder, another addition. I have a couple of very expensive hi fi units - both are listed, as is the boys' ipods etc.

You can't just take out a 'value' insurance then expect the insurer to cough up for the £15k rolex you've just lost.

I'm insured with Admiral and I haven't told them it has red stripes on it; the car has been insured with them since I got it too. When first insuring it I did it all over the phone and they never asked me anything about it. The only thing they did ask me was if it had alloy wheels, which they wanted to put down as a modification. I had a little argument with them explaining that it comes with alloys as standard so they were quite happy with that.

Last month, some horrible person reversed into my rear right wheel arch denting it in, removing a considerable amount of paint and damaging the stripe extensively. They then buggered off and left me to find it like that

Anyway, it's all been fixed now, and I had to claim on the insurance, and they repaired it all no problem, replacing the stripe.

So what I'm trying to get at is, I don't think you do have to tell them if it's factory fitted.

Thanks for backing me up on this for those that don't know what they are talking about.

As I said before, it is a 'STANDARD FACTORY OPTION' and there for NOT classed as a modification. there for does not 'HAVE TO BE DECLARED', but of course you can if you wish! As long as you have the invoice for the purchase, in the event of an insurance claim they will use the invoice to declare what the car has on it. if it was lowered, had a boy racer exhaust, turbo, etc all fitted after the car has left the FACTORY then YES you would need to declare.

This comment is going back a bit now but home insurance is different to that of the car. Most insurance companies wont insure after market stereo equipment. Some will but you will have to come up with evidence of ownership in the event of a claim. In neither circumstance will you have to tell your insurance that it is in the car.

My small print states they will pay up to £250 for stereo, it doesn't state it has to be original or aftermarket.
As for declaring, well that is up to you but if you later declare a very expensive ice being nicked that they knew nothing about, they might just decide not to pay out as such an expensive item would make your car more of a target than the next.

As said it does depend on who the insurance co is. Mine stipulates that it will pay out up to £750 on OE Stereo equipment.

I think you are misunderstanding the Point Sludge. You are allowed any amount of Value of ICE equipment as it is seen no different to leaving an expensive watch in the car, Sat Nav, a computer etc etc. It may say in your insurance that you are insured for up to £250 personal goods, but you dont have to phone and tell the insurance every time you drive the car with more than that value with you.
I have tried telling my insurance co's in the past what ICE i have and they have no field to enter it into lol. They just dont care. (Until it starts an electrical fire of course)

I now have specific modified car insurance which comes with a tick box sheet of mods. ICE isnt even mentioned.

My original post was a Statement of Fact not a Statement open to debate.

I'm interested in this thread. I've just bought a Punto Sporting 1.9, its a Linea Race (with the MS design alloys/spoiler/skirts/stripe and graphics along both sides etc. It was obviously purchased from the dealer as such when new but I believe it just comes up as a Sporting on the V5. Where do I stand with this as far as insurance goes?

Just make the extras clear to the insurer when getting quotes.. it may be easier to speak to a specialist insurer like my company.

Was there ever any conclusive answer regards side stripes and insurance?
I am finding that quotes as are adding up to £80 because I mention the side stripes!!! If it was only an issue that they wouldn't cover the extras if car had to be repaired...then I would rather save £80!!!
My stripes (along with other extras like half glass roof and privacy glass) were optional extras when new.
Its ridiculous!!!

Get in there!!
Had a quote with Swinton and included glass roof, stripes, privacy glass and side bumper strips and got it for £165 with low excess and inc. Legal cover and protected NCD.
Initially quoted £295...but when I told them I had a quote on a comparison site I was gonna check out for £207...they knocked off £125!!!!

Good luck, I had mass issues with Swinton 18 months go, although it did result in compo for their horrendous series of muck ups on 4-5 policies I had with them.

Don't forget Swinton are a broker also, lots of charges along the way should you need to make changes normally, although a good price if you don't :)
