Hi guys,

Im just after a bit of information from owners of remapped m-jets.

Have you notified your insurance company that the car has been remapped? and if so how did you explain what a remap is to them?

I ask this as i rang my insurance company up and told them i am thinking about getting my car remapped and they didnt seem to understand what i meant (mabye as the customer services department is based in india!!!) So they put me on hold and came back to me and seemed to think i was getting my car "chipped". Would this be the correct terminology?

Any help would be greatlyl appreciated!

Yes its similar, although when you get chipped the new map is loaded onto a replacement chip which is then swapped for your current one or if that's not supported they can do a "piggy back" chip which gets loaded ontop of your current one.

A ECU remap just reprograms the one you have in the ECU which is the modern method of "chipping" cars.

thanks for the info chris!

Im abit gutted about that then! Admiral said if my car is chipped then my insurance will be void! will have to wait till i renew and find an insurer that will allow me to remap it!

would an insurance company ever decide to rolling road your car if in a crash? remaps arent visible are they? so they probably wouldnt know to be honest. not that its a good idea to mod without declaring

I seriously wouldn't bother declaring it tbh. Only time it would come into question is if there was a huuuuuge crash involving you and they forensicly examined the whole car (they may have a need to remove and examine the ECU, if it survives the crash that is!).

Although as you say to play it by the book you need to declare it. I got away with not declaring stuff when I was younger but just things like alloys, light eyebrows etc.

I have it all declared now as im 22 and they don't want to bum rape me for every slight thing lol. GSR Induction kit, remap, Abarth Sideskirts and OZ Supperleggera's only put it up £75 a year.

Who knows impossible to say what they will and wont, can or cant do. If you map it and dont declare it then its a risk you choose to take! I know what my personal choice is :)

Yep 100% agree with that, dont want to take the risk tbh. Ill just wait a few months until my renewal and shop around. cheers.

Also don't forget you can get your best quote and Chris Knott (Under the Fiat forum insruance scheme) will beat it by at least a further 10% (y).

Really? i havnt heard this.

I will have to have a look into this!

funny that, I just got off the phone with Admiral and it was £14 to add a remap onto the policy.

just declare it, im not gona get into details, not worth hassle of void insurance, court judgements e.t.c

Same here, Im insured with them. Most cars ive had apart from the last two/fiats and the alfa were all mapped - told them that when I took the policy out.

The most expensive increase I had was when I had my smart-car remapped, 64 - 83bhp:slayer:, they put the premium up by £35 for the year!

Might be on age?

join the club mate. got a 1.9 sporting. fast as anyway. want it quicker though.

try admiral. juts put it as the ****ty chip. then it goes up by £30 also dont use comparison sites. my insurance now is only £800 for the year no no claims bonus + a crash 2 years ago. gocomapre quoted £1200. also nfu mutual are really good. not sure about the price.
