I have just taken insurance out on my car and they require a Thatcham CAT 2-1 alarm fitted.

I fitted myself, but will get a certificate at an authorised place, but I'm a bit confused......

Cat 1 is a full imobiliser and alarm

Cat 2-1 is an alarm, that will give a car with a CAT 2 imobilsior, CAT 1 status.

My question is, MUST a CAT 2-1 alarm be used in conjunction with a CAT 2 imobiliser, or can is it independant, and you just retain the 2-1 status? Rather than CAT 1 status?

I have no factory imobilisor, but want to avoid fitting a whole new CAT 1 alarm.

Cheers for any input :)

A Cat 2-1 and Cat 1 are essentially the same (an alarm with immobiliser), but the Cat 2-1 is an upgrade path if you already have an immobiliser. If you don't have an immobiliser then you'll need to get a Cat 1....

Presumably the insurance believe you have an immobiliser which is why they've said Cat 2-1?

I did tell then it USED to have a factory imobilisor, but that has now been removed due to the aftermarket engine management, but they still specified Catagory 2-1 even after chatting with them. Thats what had me confused.

I guess I should bite the bullet and get a CAT 1 alarm fitted and flog mine on ebay...shame as thats a big whack of money :(

Cheers,

Kristian
