What's the situation with insurance in my circumstances?

I am going to pick up a car this weekend that I have bought that at present doesn't have an MOT or tax. Will pass the MOt no problem though as it's been pre inspected before I bought and have been guarenteed it'll pass unless a bulb or something minor goes until then :)

Obviously I need to have an MOT and tax before I insure it? Correct?

If so what are the laws regarding getting the car from where it is to an MOT station for an MOT and then down to the nearest Post Office for the Tax?

I am guessing I won't be allowed to drive insurance free so how do I get around it?

I think you're going to need a trailer to put it on. I believe, I'm not certain, that if it's taxed & insured but the MOT has run out your insurer will let you drive it to an approved MOT station only, otherwise you are NOT insured. Ring your insurer before you do anything to be sure you are covered. If you try to drive it home as it is, and you get stopped by plod, you'll be up before the magistrates, loads of points on your licence and a fine, if you're lucky. Remember the police now have the power to take the vehicle off you and get it crushed.

aslong as your insured wen you pick the car up and drive it STRAIGHT HOME youll be fine but make sure you have an M.O.T. booked for the same or following day (if you get stoped and asked were your going etc....)you can drive a car to a mot station wit no tax or mot coz u need the mot to get tax so youve only gotta worry boput having it insured!

why would it be okay to drive straight home? straight to a pre booked MOT yes.

If you've bought a car with no MOT or TAX you cannot drive it on the road except to and from a pre-booked MOT. If you get stopped by the police / VOSA or get picked up on a camera you'll need to get the MOT station to confirm your story and the times and dates will need to line up. You must have insurance whenever the car is on a public highway including driving to and from MOT station. So what you need to do is get insurance and the documents, book into an MOT near to the place where the car is, get the MOT (not a problem you say) then take insurance and MOT certificate to a post office to buy the TAX (not in said car because that would be illegal). Only then can you drive the car on a public highway without risk of a fine, points or court visit. Otherwise pay someone to trailer the car to your house and sort it out from there. Also say for example you bought a car up north and wanted it down south. the police would look dimly on you driving considerable distances without MOT or TAX to a test station in the south as it's pretty obvious what you're doing. So the MOT should be local.
