Always looking at things and wishing I could capture it in a photo. See so much stuff and wanting to capture it. So, been pondering over a D40 for the last few weeks and now really wanting to take the plunge and get myself one. But just wondering if any of you guys would recommend something a little more expensive that could/would blow the D40 away.

Can afford to go about that little more expensive as doing a finance deal. Say £350max.

(£22p/m over 10 months with £75 deposit [for the record] with some **** £40 camera bag)

Cheers
Danny

The only problem with a DSLR is that you won't want to carry it everywhere with you. I have a D70s and it's excellent for capturing moments. But having that weight around your neck makes you leave it at home or in the car sometimes. If you've got another camera then go for a DSLR by all means. But if you're going to have it as your only camera then I personally wouldn't reccomend it as it's a pain carrying a DSLR around with you everywhere.

I'm never far from my car so if i needed it only a short walk. I've got a Casio Exilim (something like that anyway). Was well expensive back in the day, but time for something "proper."

Camera is needed for next week really. Got lots of things to photograph. That I know of so far. Going to BTCC at Croft end of the month, planning the BTCC at knockhill. New York and Boston, Global Gathering, the £999 challenge.

Just wish I'd had it at the Pirelli Rally :(

Fair enough then. You won't get anything at a BTCC event of a rally with a compact unless you're very lucky. DSLR is the only way to go.

the d40 is tiny compared to the D70. I use a D50 which has a similar body casing to the D70, and have used a D40.. much smaller.

Others to look at, the d40x and the D60. Both are 'small' DSLRs

Would get the D40x but to much :(

Yeah tried getting some pic's last year with the EX-Z4 but rubbish.

where are you getting these prices?

D40x £330 - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NIKON-D40X-SL...rkparms=72:12|39:1|65:12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Have you looked at canon kit, the 400d is cheap at the moment. canon do cashback offers, which are worth looking at.

With regards to second hand, i got my D50 second hand and would do it again. But if you don't like buying them second hand that's fine - just means lower prices for people like me :d

The D60 has £90 cashback.

If you had the choice....400D or D40?

Been doing it through Dixons. Probably couldn't find a more expensive place but easiest to check finance. Looks like the D40 is really best suited to me.

After much debate I ended up buying the D40 a couple of weeks ago (see my thread 'Starter Digital SLR')

I cannot praise it enough, it's a lovely little camera with a very capable kit lense.

My only wish was that I had taken Jessops half price offer on a second lens because I found that the zoom just doesnt go far enough at times. Like when in the stands watching motor racing, etc.

I took it with me to the RWYB at Shakespeare County Raceway yesterday and got some good pictures of Ghost's MR2 going down the strip. Will upload a few sample pictures later (bare in mind that they quality would be better coming from someone who knows a bit more about setting up good photos).

Hope that helps mate :)

I used to sell these for a living up until six months ago (I was the Technical Support Manager for www.warehouseexpress.com) and I shoot weddings semi-professionally using Nikons too.

Get a D40!! You will not regret it. It may 'only' have six MP but I have used the D40 and produced 30"x20" prints (poster size) and they look awesome. Its easy to use and I have used one as a second camera at weddings and it just blew me away.

I just pulled this picture from yesterday off the camera (will pull the rest off later) so it hasnt been shopped, resized or editted in any way yet

This was taken with the D40 running the standard 18-55mm kit lens, freehand on a clear and slightly sunny day.

Just an idea of the D40's abilities when in the hands of a newbie :D

I've got 4 20*30 signed rally prints done with a D70 and D70s which have the same sensor as the D40. Look great blockmounted. Only problem I find is that like with most digital cameras they really overdo reds.
