hi
i have a kodax digital 5mill camera,it keeps failing me so thinking of buying another.any suggestions.
i need something simple to use, as i not the bights penny in the box took me ages to learn the last one, i like the zoom feature and the macro it has i have a budget of about £100 ish.
am i better of with a digital or are there better things for me?
thanks in advance

i don't know a great about compacts, i use a fuji F31FD for my compact. i know others who use the canon ixus / powershort axxx range and rate them highly. i'm not sure what they cost.

if you are after a bridge camera as opposed to a compact, the fuji s5600 should be in budget and is worth looking at :)

whats happened to the kodak?? has it actually broken down or just not happy with it?

as arc says, the F31d (maybe f32d now? is the new model?), fuji are pretty good,

can't go wrong with a canon but doubt you'll get one for that.

STEAR CLEAR of anything that says its 12mega pixels or 14megapixels or something daft! they are pretty pap unless its a bright sunny day.

anything compact from pentax/fuji/nikon/canon/ricoh will be reputable.

amazon do some resonable prices on them all

i think the latest fuji compact is the f45fd now. Though i'm perfectly happy with my f31fd - should be able to pick one up for a good price. A lot of the pics on this gallery page of mine where shot using the f31fd http://tackycheese.net/gallery/main.php
(it should say at the bottom of each image what it was taken on!)

as faster_4_tec has said though, anything by pentax/fuji/nikon/canon/ricoh should be good. Pop down to Jessops and have a play with the different camreas, but remeber you'll get them cheaper online ;)

And yeah, avoiding super high MP counts. To brielfy explain why.. assume the sensor that records the image is 10mm x 10mm. In a 6mp camera, chances are the sensor will be the same size as in an 8mp camera. So the 8mp camera will have much small pixels, less sensitive to light and more likely to be effected by noise.

If you want to read into reviews and compare various cameras online, http://www.dpreview.com has a side by side comparision feature which is rather handy.

seems canon are doing cashback on the powershot range(Starts: 20/03/2008 Expires: 31/03/2008)

All Cameras have Face Detection technology and a generous 2.5" LCD screen and Optical viewfinders. The more expensive the camera the greater number of features and performance the camera has. All the cameras use 2x AA batteries(except A650IS which uses 4x) so are compatible with readily available AA rechargeable batteries.

its the switch to turn it on some times it won't work the lens will move out but you cant take a picture this happens in all modes.i had same problem with it when it was new and a circuit board was replaced. now its out of warranty so i bet it will cost a bomb to fix!!

i have been pleased with the picture from it but i cant do clever things like a timer on it and ghost effect which looks like a lot of fun
i will spend some time looking at all these camera see if i can get a bargain

I don't know if it's the sort of thing you're looking for but I bought 'er indoors a Nikon Coolpix L12. Doesn't have the greatest range of features on the market but is good in difficult lighting situations and has survived being dropped onto concrete a few times. 7.1 MP and a good screen with variable exposure, macro facility and shake reduction. Should come in below £100.

I saw up there a canon A580 = £66

the 560/580 series were great cameras! plenty of them still knocking about,

they WERE honestly £200 when they were on the shop shelfs, and sold plenty at that price.

I got an ixus 50 instead, as it was smaller (got a set of proper cams but wanted something tiny + fairly good)

good choices!!

the canon is nicer to hold and use IME, its the much more modern version of an A580/90 etc... and get rave reviews.
the pana also gets rave reviews, but is £50 (?) more expensive, and I personally don't like the menu layouts etc. also find the cam is too short (top to bottom) so my fat fingers can't really use it LOL).

go to a shop (jesssops or local good private cam shop) they will have these two most likely then see which you like the best!

TBH resonably quality digi compacts between £100-225 are all very capable, perform very well, and won't dissapoint, its just what you want, size and usability wise that should decide which you get (y)

I tend to go for the bigger compacts with the battery grip, as whilst I WANT a smaller cam, I just can't hold onto them properly

You cant go wrong with Fuji cameras, I'v had the S5600/S5200 (theyre the same) and now have the S2Pro.

Yeah i'd reccomend a Fuji anyday,

Go Canon, can't beat them, all my gear is canon: camera, printer scanner, lenses etc great reliability, great results...

it was tough choice but went with what was in stock and it was the panasonic tz3 and i am very pleased what do you think of these?

looking good (y) great composisiton on all four of them :D (except maybe the flower one.. the edge of the petal in shot too would've worked a tiny bit better :) )

macro mode should be fine, without knowing the camera well though i couldn't comment on other settings for it :)

borders.. do you have photoshop? all i do is go to image > canvas size and then increase it by however many pixels i want the border, and set the canvas extension colour to the colour that i want as the background.
