Re: Opinions on website (from normal people, not geeks)

@Mig: just wondering are you in the business? as i've said already internet development is a major part of my course..we are doing basic stuff at the moment as it's first year. doing htm and css and all that. Found it very boring at the start but it's getting interest now that we are able to script proper websites. just wondering if you have just done scripting or have you done any software coding? Another module of the course is programming..doing VB6 at the mo and I hate it!! just wondering if you are in the business and if so whats it like? a bit of career guidance!!!:D:D(y)

I also understand your frustration with programmes like dreamweaver and the like!!

Well im a programmer in Java, Java.Net mainly using Jboss and I absolutely hate coding websites, I normally use dreamweaver then have a quick look at the code to make sure there isn't anything filthy in there that shouldn't be.

My Advice would be start over again in a different discipline (Fiat Tech's make more money than the average IT job!) the I.T industry in this country is f***ed as its over saturated with these "Computeach" muppets who don't know ram from sheep. As a result its driving down the skill base and reducing salary's in the main skill zones.

The only way to make big money now is to go it alone as a freelance consultant and do a variety of things in IT (i.e Web Design, Systems&Business Analysis, OpenSource VOIP Phone systems etc etc) This is what Im currently working on and is in the pipeline. Ive gone from being a programmer to being a Linux Systech as its better money as there is a skill shortage in Linux at the moment and a higher demand for competent people.

Sorry if it sounds a bit negative but thats how the industry is at the moment. If I could go back 5years Id be changing the course I did at college.

yeah, but he has made a website to display his pictures.. not launch a career in IT!

i fully understand what is being said about web standards, had it drummed into my head enough at uni - and yea i agree every site should pass w3c validation, but surely all this ranting should be targetting at the people behind Dreamweaver, not Chris!!

Edit: Edited the above post to make sure people know I wasn't aiming my comment at bushboy.

i'm doing business information systems..its a bit boader than just IT..the main modules are system and business analysis..sofware programming..web development along with all the business side of things..like management and financial accounting..economics..business stats..marketing..psycology etc. The prospects over here for highly skilled graduates seem much better. The course covers almost every aspect of business. we already had Deloitte poaching..they came in and gave us a presentation..like 3months into the course!

Re: Opinions on website (from normal people, not geeks)

Have to say I am amazed at some of the comments here. Bloke puts up a link to a website for comments. Someone says looks nice & clean. A purist comes on and makes a comment about standards and now the first bloke changes his mind!!

Reminds me of a program I saw recently where these so called critics at an art exhibition waxed lyrical about style, feeling, expression around some paintings.Turned out they had been painted by an elephant.

Everyone's an expert it seems. Anyway, I may be on here a lot less as I will be checking the html on every site I go to.

Re: Opinions on website (from normal people, not geeks)

i've not changed my mind

i was looking at the site for what it is, and what is going to be used for. then the thread shifted toward web standards etc which are important, but i then brought it back to what the site is meant to be used for and the reasoning behind why the coding is not going to be validated.

Not you arc, see posts 20 & 24. I just don't know how to put two quotes on the same post.

I am also a purist, but as I was doing a million and one other things I didnt run the code through the validator when I first looked, which is something I would do to any site that I had been asked to comment on normally. Anyway, think of me what you will, I really dont care much for personal opinions on me of someone the other end of a computer.

I offered no personal opinion of you, just a statement of fact.

Re: Opinions on website (from normal people, not geeks)

So now you are saying it is ok if it is NOT validated?! :bang:

I'm saying if it is possible for you to produce a site that validates then you should. HOWEVER in the case of a forum, it is practically impossible for them to validate because the code is generated by a piece of software that does not follow the rules for validation. You are controlled by the software abilities in these cases. When you are writing a fixed content site then it should ALWAYS validate because the contents is fully within your control!

I wish people who don't understand these things wouldn't pass judgement!
