okie kokie.

just found out i'm owed some holiday pay from a job i'm finishing next week.. so me wants to buy myself sumfink nice. like a DSLR camera. my dad is after a new camera so if i get a nice new DSLR i may give him my s5600. cos i'm nice like that (sometimes)

Budget is around £300.

Contenders are

Nikon D40/D50/D70(s).
Canon 350D.

Nikon D40.

Pros.
Cheap, can be had for around £270 (with cashback) from Jessops with kit lens.
Small and lightweight (compared to other cameras i've listed).
Has dedicated AF lamp (compared the 350D which uses the flash/strobe).
Better metering than 350D.
kit lens is good.
well built.

Cons.
gotta use AF-S or AF-I lenses for autofocus, meaning lenses are not as easy to source and are so more expensive.
no seperate status LCD.
no DOF preview
not many buttons, so lots of going through menus to change settings etc.

Nikon D50

Pros
Compatible with lots'o'lenses.
erm.. it's good!

Cons.
kit lens aint so hot.
no mirror lockup
no backlight on status lcd.

Canon 350D

pros
image processor very good.
low noise
fast 7 point AF system

cons
no AF lamp.
no spot metering.
controls can be fiddly (compared to D50)

soo.. can anyone help me out here. will go into town when i can and actually use as many of these as possible to see which one feels right to use.

maybe just wait a while longer and get the D80 or even the D200 if your dedicated., or sell the oylmpus to your dad and have more money for the new camera.,

nada. its not a case of not having the money, its more how much i wanna spend on one and d80 is looking around £450+ for the body only... too much.

d50

OR

Sony/minolta/konica jobby (forgot name:eek: ) something 100
tis a good cam, wiht a shd load of lense's going for them. IMO better built/finished than the d40/400D competitors, loads of buttons :D and can be had for around the £350 mark with kit lense. and £380, with TWO kit lense's :D (y)

yeah, i've considered the sony a100. not heard a lot about them though. can only find it near the £400+ mark though. where u seen it £380 with two lenses?

Ive just bought a D50 and tbh, at the moment, i cant fault it. The only thing that kinda annoys me is that the on screen preview is always over exposed. You get used to it though.

The reason I didnt go for the D40 was basicly the lenses. Puts me in the same situation as having the Olympus E-500. There are only specific lenses for it which makes them expencive and have a very small second hand market. I would highly recommend the E-500 though if you arent planning on buying masses of lenses. the 14-54mm pro lens can be picked up for around £200 on ebay or £300 new. Its superb and miles better than the kit lens.

Cant really go wrong with the D50 though. 6.whatever mega pixels is fine im finding. Was a little concerned when downgrading from 8mp on the e-500 but its not causing me any grief. The kit lens is the same lens as found on my old F55, its not bad atall imo and took quite possibly some of my best photos.

tbh I dont have any experience with them. I have heard that the Canon kit lenses are pretty poor though and I have seen some terrible results from the 400D but that may just have been down to the user (although she used it just on auto everything).

You cant really go wrong with a Canon or a Nikon really though, both are the top brands in the buisness and both have loads of third party accessories and big second hand markets.

i used to have the D50 myself, its a good camera and I stuck to nikon when i was getting the D80 as ive never had any problems with them., as for the canons, i havent had a lot of experience with them either but my instincts would go with the nikon.,

d50 is looking like the winner at the moment.

like i say, need to pop to town and use a few of these cameras and see how they fit in my hands.

ta (y)

nice lot you got there., you wont be disapointed with it, i sold mine for 150 a few months ago., handy that you got the grip with it too,.,

£150 peas and rice thats poor

used cameras always seem to hold their value quite nicely Iv'e found. must have been a bad day. or you were selling it in early january when noone has any money
lol., no, i sold it to a friend., :D

it's here!!!

nikon d50, kit lens, remote, spare battery, nikon bag, mem card, battery grip and a 81A (warm?) filter. :D

:D now i must go to work :(

What's an 81A filter used for btw, it came with everything else and i've only ever looked at UV and polarising filters before now.
