Ok.

I decieded i wanted a camera with more manual control and a better zoom than what i had. I don't want a DSLR camera yet, but i want something that'll let me play with lots of settings.

The following images are shot from pretty much the same place. They're not the best for comparisons, but it was mainly the zoom i was trying to show.

The two cameras are the Fuji F31FD and the Fuji S5600.

And i've thrown a camera phone shot in there as well.

Everything left in full auto mode, but with the flash disabled.

first up is the K800i (3.2mp) Camera Phone

then the F31fd (6mp)

then at full (3x) optical zoom.

then the S5600 (5mp)

and at full (10x) optical zoom.

like i said, not great pictures - but they show some differences!

i take it your a fugi fan huh.,lol., :p
so you after a compact or a bridge type camera then?
i have a great little compact, well its not tiny but small enough and very good specs.,
its a Lumix LX2, 10.2mp, full manual mode, scene modes, auto etc, and it has a manual focus function too.,(y)

quite fond of fujis yeah. I've got a 1.2mp finepix summit or other somewhere as well!
i'm not after a camera now, i've got the two i want (for now!)

The spec on the Lumix sounds good - but i'm very happy with the F31 as a compact. Such a small camera and can still take very good pictures.

the S5600 been talked about on here before, in one of owens threads, as i said then i have the s5000 looks very much the same and easy to use, but can be a bugger to carry around.
find the other thread as it had site links with good prices in

yeah, the S5600 crops up a lot - it's why i chose it, so much good stuff said about it. When i grow up, i'll buy a grown up DSLR camera - but i know if i got one now, i'd spend far too much on new lenses and stuff. For now, i can play with the s5600 manual mode - then when i want more, buy a grown up camera.

I have the F31 so i can take that everywhere with me, like you say - the s5000/s5600 is a bugger to carry around.

jessops do a really good high end compact, called a ????? (bugger forgot name, it will come back to me). goes down (more important) to 26 or 28mm equivilent.

you'll find on the 5600 that yah, 10x is great, when spying on negihbours, but thats about it, I very rarely use the zoom, and for what I do, would crave a wider lense:(

This has proven very useful in seeing a real application of 10x optical zoom. I was recently considering a semi-SLR Panasonic Lumix F27 which has 12x optical with manual or servo barrel control and manual focus too. Mixed reviews and bills to pay meant I went off the idea quite soon.

Considering the price and fairly limited features (by today's standards) of my compact Kodak, I am delighted with some of the pictures from over the years, though I think this is just as much to do with knowing what the camera likes and doesn't like as to its real capabilities.

It's got 4x optical which gives it slightly longer legs than most 3x compacts. It owes me nothing.

Anyway arc, I would suggest that if you want more adjustability but not the full SLR adjustment/price have a poke at the Lumix F27. A lot of people rate Kodak's equivalent camera too but I'm not so enthused.

I'm going to be doing a lot of testing cameras after a few weeks at work so will report back my findings.

I think not buying a potentially excellent camera because of the battery pack it uses would be absolutely ridiculous.

Of course an AA-powered camera is good because you can use rechargeables anyway.

yep., i have 2 batteries for both my compact and SLR, but never really find the need for them., most of the batteries last for ages., i havent charged the compact for about 3 weeks and i use it regularly., the trouble with cameras that take AA type batteries is they usually tend to be a bit bigger and uglier to be able to accept the size of the AA batteries.,
and if you look on ebay you can get a charger, spare battery and a car charger for pretty much any camera and that'll only cost ya about a tenner.,(y)
