Rear drum squeak

My handbrake isn't holding me well on slight hills, I have a nice rolling backwards feeling, and sometimes my rear passenger side drum seems to brake and squeak whilst driving, I have to pull up the handbrake and put it back down a few times to sort it out. does anyone know where to start to sort this problem out...

Sounds like you may have wound the brake adjusters fully short when cleaning.

Did you dismantle the shoes , springs and self adjusters when you cleaned out the drums and then reassemble everything ?

Had to go back as my brake pipe Flexi hoses were rubbing against the drive shafts causing the Flexi to bulge out causing a spongee feel to them , could have blown at any time , check your hoses if you have same feel

This is a classic oversight that most make when renewing/servicing rear brake drums. Even if the adjusters are cleaned & put back together, some people forget/do not know to pump the brake pedal ten times or so to make the adjusters work as they should.

Plus lots of auto adjuster simply do not work unless they are manually set so the shoes are near the drum when reassembling.

Re: Rear drum squeak

Aye, for those of us in the know, it's a simple job. Like other areas that need servicing such as the brakes, I'm afraid it's only when things are not working as they should when they get looked at. This is the time of year just before the really bad weather sits in that I inspect the braking system on my vehicles. On my diesel hack it's a case of rear drums off clean & service as necessary. Handbrake cables are inspected & lubed or adjusted or changed. In the spring or summer I repeat. A satisfying job to make a habit of, especially so if your car is getting on in years....
