Hi

Where/how can I check and/or top up the gearbox oil on an Idea?

Kind regards

Simon

Simon, As there has not been an answer to your question.........yet.

I may be able to help.I'm no spanner man, but I'v owned just about every Fiat model(well almost).
There is a level check plug, and if you remove that, the oil should just be at that point.
If it does not leak oil, then it should not need touching for some time.
I have a Marea. @90k, and I have no need to change the oil , or top it up..

I owned a Lancia Beta 1400 in the late 70's(a Fiat Group product) and this car was front wheel drive and had a lovely little dip stick for the gearbox. For checking level and filling, but not these days unless the Idea is special in that respect.

Many thanks Ian :)

That's what all cars should have now too! Hey - the '70s were good in a lot of respects - I was also produced in the '70s :D

My Idea has only done 45K but I reckon that the gearbox is failing or a gearbox mount has failed (bad vibrations, not good vibrations :p, and very noisy!)

Fiat quoted nearly £1200 for a reconditioned gearbox  £558 from the scrappy. Crikey!

Have you tried the BAY for a box?.................or specialist gearbox re-con merchant should be better than a dealer price.

The cheapest I managed to find was at my local breakers yard for £558 off an Idea that had done 22k. So, half price but still quite a shocking price for a part that only comes with a 2 month warranty.

As that model is rare(ish), I would try and find out how close it is to the Punto 1.4 engine/gearbox(if that is the capacity you have?)..................It could well be identicle.

If that is the case, it opens up a huge market for you, and you could halve
the price.

I rented an IDEA in Tuscany a few years back, and found that it delivered super milage , about 55 mpg.
It was in actual fact a Lancia version called a MUSA, but basically the same.
