Right, here goes:
Best place for speakers is rear shelf - BUT replace the standard one with a decent MDF Stealth shelf. Add a decent pair of components or (controversial) 6x9's, fit a high-pass crossover to the standard front speakers and use them purely as mid and treble units.
Sub cabling: run a good quality fused power cable from the battery, through the bulkhead (there's a spare grommet behind the gearbox side) and down the side of the car under all the plastic trim, into the boot, along with the amp switching cable and the phono cable from the head unit. Earth the amp on a convenient bolt in the boot.
As for head unit, anything by Alpine, Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer should be fine.
