New speakers sound awful

2001, Mk 2 Punto. JVC Radio/CD head unit 4 x 45 Watts (100).
I have just fitted a pair of Kenwood KFC 1058S (20) rear speakers in the speaker recesses in the back of the punto and they sound terrible.
They won't hold any bass without distorting, will putting some damping (rubber or felt) between the speakers and the plastic mounting help or do I just have to live with zero bass because I have fitted cheap speakers?

The problem with standard locations is that there is almost always too much volume (as in cubic feet) that they are playing into, the punto's rear speakers use the boot as the 'enclosure'. When presented with too much space a speaker will not be able to produce good clean bass and when played loud will over exert, causing the speaker to distort. The standard speakers are basically crap but have been produced with the specification to use the boot space as an enclosure. Whilst they dont sound like they have the best clarity, they will always sound better at producing bass.

Your best bet is to ditch rear speakers and spend the money on some quality front speakers instead and some sound proofing to help them produce bass. Using an amp, even a small one, will increase the sound quality further. Then look at a sub and amp to get as much bass as you can handle. :)

The speakers are rated at 90 Watts peak.
Last night, I experimented by removing the dummy speaker covers which covered the speaker holes. These were on the car originally to cover the holes where the rear speakers go, after fitting the speakers, I refitted them for cosmetic reasons, the distortion was these covers vibrating. I shall fit the covers that came with the Kenwood speakers tomorrow & see if they vibrate.

The 1058's are only 10cm / 4 inch so you won't get cinema sound or lots of bass from them alone. Matt knows what he's on about.

:I Your too kind! :D

If its the rattling from the grills then you could remove them but can you take them out without cutting them, otherwise it will be a mess when you come to sell it on.

I still say sell them and get some decent front speakers and, eventually, an amp for them. But thats just me!! :)
