I've just put in a new sony headunit in. I've had to clip the yellow and red wire from the unit together (there was an option to do this already wired in) to be able to get it to turn on. This means that it is on all the time and doesn't turn off when the key comes out. Is there anyway to wire the red from the new headunit to a wire in the punto so that it will turn off via taking the key out?

I've got a mk2b and moved the red wire from the HU so its above the yellow like youve done. It won't turn on at all when it is like this. any advice?

Swap the red and yellow wires around ,but I think the idea is to get the ignition switched wire ( the one that powers the stereo to switch on not the one that stay permanently live to keep your radio stations set up etc) to join to the green wire which is live when ignition is on.

Check you've not blown a fuse on stereo or car whilst swapping/changing wires around.
