Hey guys
Hoping someone can give me some advice here. Bought a used Punto for a steal; had a a few issues I knew about. One of them is that the radio is faulty; it's the standard F199 radio/cd player the car shipped with.
Took it for a service this morning, the dealers say the radio needs repair or replacing and they'd need to send it to the agents (Blaupunkt) in Johannesburg. Getting it there is already more than the cost of an aftermarket radio since it's out of warranty and it might not be fixable anyway. I asked about a straight replacement and was told it's about R6000 (about 480 quid or $750) which is insane. Welcome to the 3rd World!
The service guy pretty much said I should rather look at an aftermarket radio which I could get for between 1/4 and 1/6 of that, depending on what I bought. I would need a fascia board replacement to fit the dash, which is fine, but he's unsure on whether or not the steering wheel controls would work on the aftermarket replacement.
So... anyone got any experience with this sort of thing and know if an aftermarket radio would still be controllable? It's not a train-smash if it isn't, but 1st prize would be that it is. I've read around the issues of changing the wiring to connect it to the ignition - not sure I'd do all that; hopefully the guys I buy the aftermarket radio from can do that for me - so the only real question is whether the multi-function steering wheel would work or not.
Thanks in advance
