I have just purchased a DLS CA23 two channel amplifier which will in the short term power a set of JL Audio C2-650 coaxials.

I eventually want it to power a set of DLS C6A components but am worried there might be too much power in the amp as it is 135w RMS (4 ohm) yet the speakers are 50 W RMS / 80 W max. I know you can adjust the gain on the amplifier but how do I set it all up as not to blow the speakers?

thanks

If you use factory speakers that are connected to the OEM wiring then this is what I suggest:

Turn the gain on the amp down - all the way
Turn the volume of the HU up until you begin to hear distortion through the factory speakers - then turn it down a notch or two until it is clear again
Then begin turning the gain up on the amp until the same happens, when you hear distortion turn the gain down a little so that the speakers are not running at 100%, perhaps 90-95%

If you only have amped speakers in your setup and they all run off the same amp then just turn the volume all the way up on the HU and slowly increase the gain until you hear distortion, then decrease a notch or two.

If you also have other amps in your setup i.e. sub amps it is easier to disconnect these before you set up the new amp by unplugging the RCA's, this way you will hear the music clearly, without other things drowning it out.

Hope this is the type of answer you were after :)

Where do you live? We tend to use a Scope to check the wave for Squaring and then turn it down from there.
The power of your amp shouldn't be an issue IMO.
