hey, ive just bought a vrx 15 inch 600w sub, and i have to make a box for it, but i dont know if there should be a hole in it, because some people say there has to be a hole in it, but some people say it should be sealed?
can anybody help???

i cant find any data on your sub, do you have a model number for it?

Basically, the box with a hole in with is called a ported box - allows an amount of air to pass in and out of the bass during bass reprocussion. Now this creates more thumpy bass, but lacks precision. A sealed box is the other way round - it doesnt thump as much - but gives tight controlled bass.

If you find details on the sub, you may find it needs to be in a ported box, or it may need to be in a sealed box. (may even be free air), but it should tell you somewhere its recommended enclosure type :)

Also with a Hole in it there is less chance of popping your cone... personally I'd say put a hole in the box depending on the type of music your listenin to would.

Hard constant T'umpin's of beats would probably require a sealed box so you ain't overwhelmed with Noise.

A more relaxed B-Line I'd recommend a hole.

Ive got a 12" VRX 600w sub, think its 12" anyway, I bought the matched kit of amp and sub, sounds awesome, its ported, just the cone facing out, sounds great in my puntos boot, some kick off it.

Besides risking to popping of the cone with a sealed box,

Sealed boxes are for punchy, tight bass
Ported are for deep, loud bass

Actually it is a matter of preferance as music. If you are like me and into HipHop you will do better with ported.

I was stuck with using a sealed enclosure cos of boot space. I wouldn't have been able to get at the spare with a larger enclosure! It is also easier to build a sealed enclosure.

hmm, ok ill put a hole in it then, i dont wana pop it, looks well groovy

can you compromise with the size of the port?

its not as simple as "putting a hole" in the box. The location, length and diameter all play a factor in the sub box volumes calculation - Which needs to be matched to your sub for optimum efficiency :)

And you can have a small hole, to try and bridge the gap between sealed and ported, but you'll never get the accuracy of a sealed box with a hole in it.
