my sony xplod 6x9 speakers rated at 200w distort when at high volumes, why?- the distortion changes when i change my bass/treble

so on my stereo for the bass and treble it has, - 12 to + 12 to change it(goin up and down 1 by 1), so can you tell me what to set it on to get none or least distortion. (y) oh as well the stereo is rated at 4x40 watts, if that helps.

The distortion is caused by your headunit clipping out the signal. Adjusting the bass and treble will indeed make a difference as you are altering the signal. Bass notes generally get distorted more, so setting the bass to the minimum will solve at louder volumes.

But to solely solve the problem, the 6x9s should run off an amp. Your headunit is underpowered for your speakers - which is causing your problem.

I have a Mosphet 180W Amp perfect for your 6x9's, bridge it to 360W. Can be seen on the right, dark pruple. Everything in there via the red splx sub is for sale :)

Yeah, I'd agree, turn the bass down, or turn the volume down. Failing that, amp the 6*9's with a decent amp and set your gains up properly, possibly getting them scoped.

Although, ditching them would be the better idea.
