What Boss sub are you talking about Peter? There's bound to be more than one.

Chaos-you're quite right.I'd really like to get advice on this sub,so just thought i'd ask the question-being fairly new to all this.
Thanks a lot for your help on it anyway.

cheers
Peter

Do you have/heard this sub then? If not, then you shouldn't have bothered.
If you have, then give an opinion.

Also, I don't take cheap shots, I speak the truth. You need to learn to type.

Anyway, I thought you'd logged off?

Peter,

I wasn't gonna reply to this thread, as I don't have this sub. I would suggest that you could ask for a demonstration at a local shop or something.

Failing that, let me give you my recommendation.

JBL GT-4 sub 10, 12 and 15 inch versions, going for 30, 50 and 70(IIRC) respectively. All are rated at 1000W peak/250W RMS. I own a 10 version. It needs a relatively small sealed enclosure, and doesn't need an expensive amp (mine is powered by a Sony amp, which cost me 30 quid including wiring off a mate)

Thanks again for the good advice.

Peter

Not a problem. Any problems give us a shout. Most of us are willing to help. (y)

I cant knock jbl, for price vs performance, i had the previous version to chaos the gt-3 and i cant fault it, it gives me a clean, crisp, punchy bass and for £50....doh i was laughing

The GT-4's are highly reccomended as a 'budget' sub, you do get a lot of bang for your buck. they can be picked up very cheaply and in the right wnclosure with the right power up their ar5e, they shame a lot of supposedly 'better' subs.

Remeber though, 10% equipment - 90% installation. The longer and harder you work on the right installation (including box design) the better the sub will be able to perform. A GT-4 in the right sized, well built box, will always outperform, say, a DD in a badly designed and poorly built box.

IMO it is essential to have a braced box - I can stand on mine without worrying about it collapsing. :D Took me over a week to build though - I spent 3 hours making sure it was airtight!!! I would never buy one of those ready made boxes - IMO the mdf is too thin for high quality punch, and also they are of a 'general' volume, and may not be suitable for the sub that you're planning to use in it.

Depending on the size of the box and also the sub and power you're hitting it with then bracing is not always esential. using 18mm MDF or Birch Ply will ensure the box is tough enough to withstand most subs and most amounts of power. Bracing can be beneficial but it is very fiddly trying to figure out the correct volume after you have added all the bracing. There is a site that calculates it all for you... will have a search for the link.

Regarding pre-made boxes, most are put together very well, a lot are made with 15mm MDF so ensure yours is 18mm at least and that the volume is correct. This is a simple and cheap way to get a box but if you're making your own then you can always be 100% sure that it's perfect for your uses and that it's made well.
