Hi,

Im sure what I'm about to ask has been asked before but I cannot find any threads that match my problem.

I'm trying to set up my stereo and have the following coloured wires on the block coming from the car:

Now, I know that Black is ground and Red/White is constant 12v but I can't work out what Grey or either of the Pink cables are. I got out the multimeter and measured the voltage on the Pink cables and the left Pink has 12v when the engine is off and that drops to ~5v when the engine is on. The right Pink has 0v when the engine is off and ~0.5v when the engine is on.

Ideally, I'm trying to get my stereo to turn off with the engine but I can't seem to find any cables which allow for this to happen. This seems strange though as the original Blaupunkt cassette player that came with the car DID switch off with the engine.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi, Welcome to the FF.

Do you have the handbook for the radio?

Depending on which radio you have, you should be able to set the radio to switch on and off with the ignition key by using the menu button "IGN TIME" option then pressing button 3(<<) or 6(>>).

If you don't have the radio handbook, you can download one from the forum downloads section here:

The pink wires could be CAN Bus wires, so not a good idea to probe them unless you have a high impedence multimeter.

Thanks for the reply!

I probably should have mentioned; I'm trying to set up an aftermarket Sony CD player. I can get it working fine as I connected the red and yellow cables together on the adapter which came with the CD player, so the CD player is always on.

The picture I posted in my first post is the block of wires coming directly from my car. These wires alone are able to somehow make the original cassette player which came with the car (blaupunkt) turn on and off with the ignition.

This is the bit that I don't understand, I don't get why it seems to be possible with the blaupunkt but after checking each cable with a multi meter, there doesn't seem to be a cable which is 0v when the ignition is off and 12v when the ignition is on.

Thanks

It's likely that one wire from the car will be a permanent 12v +ve supply and one will be an ignition switched 12v +ve supply. With thsoe two supplies, the menu option in the original radio could then set the radio to switch on with ignition or just the radio's ON button. The new Sony radio/Cd probably doesn't have this option.

The pink/grey cables are for the CAN bus system which are basically data lines linked to the ECU.
The reason the original stereo turns off is because its linked to the CAN bus system, and when you switch the ignition off the cars ECU sends a command down the line to the stereo telling it to switch off. This is why there is no switched live wire, because its not needed for the original stereo and Fiat obviously dont have any concept of anyone intalling an aftermarket one!!!

Aftermarket stereos arnt able to be linked to the CAN bus system, so leave these wires well alone since the CAN bus system controls alot of the cars electronic systems so wireing things into it that shouldnt be could potentially do some damage.

The only way you can switch the stereo off with the ignition is by ditching the permanant live and taking a feed off somewhere that does go off with the ignition, such as the electric window switch, or the fag lighter. Just run a wire from the live terminal to the back of the stereo. Chuck an inline fuse in there if you like just for added protection.

Cheers Oll1e, that makes quite a lot of sense.

Anybody know what kind of wire I should be looking out for and maybe even what kind of fuse I should be looking out for (so that I can add it to the electric window buttons or cigarette lighter)? Also where would I get this from?
