I have taken all my ICE out of my old car and put it in my punto. Sound quality is terrible! It sounded great in my old car. Only thing i can think of is that because my old car didn't have rear speakers as standard I had to wire them in myself, but my punto had rear speakers so i used those cables. So could the cables be the issue? Does it effect the quality that much, to the point that if i go to turn up the volume there is bad distortion... Don't wanna completely rewire the system if thats not the problem

Could be the issue, depends what wattage the rear speakers are, what headunit your using, what guage the wiring is etc.......

I take it your not amping them seeing as your using the standard wiring, if there just being amped from the headunit then they're always gonna distort when turned up.

What ICE you got in and how's it all wired (what's amped etc......)?

I'll try and get this moved to the ICE section so you'll get a better response (y)

Also you could of wired the speakers out of phase.

Check that the + goto + and the - goto -

Sounds strange I know but when I put my 6x9s in when out of phase there is no bass what so ever and sounds strange.

The car wiring is taken from the head unit, so an under seat amp will need power wires running to the speakers. Fancy cabling works best on everything, but you get the most noticeable improvement with good quality wires to the base drivers. Treble needs less raw power so gets away with cheaper cables.

One speaker is pushing a sound wave out (+ve) while the other is pushing the same sound in (-ve) so the wave peaks cancel out and you get no sound.

In reality the speakers are not both in the same place so you get funny clipped sounds.

The effect is more noticeable on the low frequencies.

No amp...

Sony XR-C5120R head unit (fairly old but still does the job)

Kenwood KFC-S6982 - 5-way 6"x9" speakers

FLI Integrator FI6 front door speakers

Standard dash mounted tweeters

Standard wiring

This setup (apart from the tweeters, standard wiring and FLI speakers - I had smaller Sony front door speakers in my metro) worked fine and went quite impressively loud and bassy considering the lack of amp!

I have amped some fli integrator 6's in my car, they play loud enough that me and the missus can't hear each other without shouting. Not amping them will always distort them. Your sending about 20 watts of power to them, they need about 70watts, nearly 4 times what your currently giving it. The sound distorts because your forcing a weak and unclear signal to play loudly. You need a stronger signal, get an amp.

And ignore the flamers on here who say fli are useless, at one point (and still mostly is) my install was fli and mutant, but it was installed properly and the equipment was matched well. It did me fine and I got a few comments about how the sound was so clear considering its volume.

It sounds like a phasing/instalation issue to me.
I would check that you have all the + and - the right way round. Then i noticed that in the punto the front speakers are often installed on top of the original plastic mountings and has air space in between the mounts. This would mean that you are not geting a good seal or baffle. This will degrade the quality considerably.
Also i recommend that you build an MDF parcel shelf to give the 6x9's a good solid baffle to push off of. (y)

Hey guys bit of an update for you.

Got a newer head unit now, Sony CDX - GT270S. My main motivation for getting this was for the AUX socket so i can plug in my iPhone.

Fixed the original problem, turns out while wiring the 6x9's i got the + and - the wrong way round on one of them!

Next problem. There is no real bass when the balance is set to middle, but i get full bass if i set the balance to all left or all right. Just none in the middle! Could this also be another silly fix or as someone suggested the need for an amp? Interestingly this still happens if i set the fade to all rear...
