planning on building a custom boot box in the wheel well, if i make the box the same volume, with the same sub and port will this give the same sound? or am i likely to get a different sounding sub when i'm finished?

Weeeeel actually.... No in all tense and purposes it will sound the same. Theoretically a spherical enclosure will be best, but weather the difference will be audible is a whole different story.

well going to be going for a round box anyway, another question, would it be the same sound using the sides of the well as the sides of the box, or should i build a whole round wooden box that will fit into the well?

much appreciated guys

How much effort are you willing to put in. I woulnt use the walls of the well as the box.
What sub are you using and have you worked out how much space you need, etc.

If you do fibreglass though dont forget to use a layer of very heavy duty sound deadening material for every 5 or so layers of FG.
Edit:- You may also need to reinforce the Wheel well i know that mine flexes like a beeyatch.

I am planning to do this when I can get the money together. The wheel well is only 6" deep so the box will probably sit proud of the well if you want to fit a 12" in there as the mounting depth is slightly bigger.

Please anybody who does this can you use a calculator on here.

A box is extremely easy to make too small and if its too small it will sound rubbish.
I have seen people try to make these and they are a fair bit of effort and because they are too small, they have ripped them out and started again.
Also if you are doing a wheel well box i would recommend using a 10" sub for numerous reasons. The chances are that it will end up sounding better than a 12" if you arent experienced.

If you are looking for 10" subs i can thoroughly recomend the Diamond D3 subs they are fab

Yup, was going to build it to correct dimensions. I was going to go for an 8" sub though as I just want it for bottom end reinforcement, not a thumping bass. Not sure which one to get though.

To get the required volume for two 10's in my Sei, I mounted them arse out, no reason you can't do that with a single 12.

Like Stu said though, soundproof the boot floor first, the FG with mould over it nicely.

I actually meant layers of Deadening inbetween thicknesses of FG but yeah deaden the wheel well first obviously. I would also use soundproofing material (luxury liner pro) in the well to stop vibration between the the two hard surfaces.

going to start this weekend, have taken my sub apart already, and worked out the internal volume of the box, so going to make the new one the same volume but round, still with the same port, and same amp

6"!!! i'm sure its far deeper than that gonna have to go check that out as will scupper my plans entirly!

so it should sound as good as it does now *fingers crossed*

i'm going to make the round box outta 6 pieces of plywood, bent into a jig and glued together x2

hopfully this will give me 2 semicircles to play with, plannin on putting all the pictures up next week once done if it all goes to plan

i'm also gonna build a console for the tyre pump and other bits to the left of the boot as well, with the amp, in that

can't wait:slayer:

I know mate, was referring to when you said reinforce wheel well :)

If the mould is done directly on to the soundproofing (well, on top of the masking tape) it will be a tight fit when finished and wont rattle as the Dynamat / whatever used will absorb it. I'd fix to the floor with 4 bolts, f'cker won't move then

Sounds like you got it planned out Daniel, good luck mate.

6" is what I read, haven't actually measured it myself as my car is in at Fiat atm...Not a biggie though, just build a false floor and raise it a few inches. I was planning on doing the same as you, building a little cubby hole in to put the pump and everything.

i'm pretty sure its bigger otherwise my 195 wheel wouldn't go in there! and i'm sure it will

i'll let you know how it goes making the round box, as i'm really not sure if its going to be a sucsess or not, and any problems i come across
