Hmm,

I've replaced my crappy 10cm standard speakers in my Uno with some top notch Sony ones (well, as top notch as you can get at that size). However, I'm getting loads of distortion at lower volumes than the old speakers, and one of them had a torn cone! I'd like to improve the audio all round but I'm not prepared to spend a great deal of money as a) I don't have it and b) I don't believe in having a stereo system worth more than the car.

Is the distortion a symptom of the s**tty original head unit? I found the same problem with the speakers removed from the dash so it's not an enclosure problem. They sounded far better in the store. Also, is an amp really necessary with 6x9s?

I'm very new to car audio - advice appreciated.

not necessary to amp 6x9's

sounds like a headunit to blame, not delivering anywhere near enough power to the speakers i'd imagain

a new head unit would help loads as it sends out a better signal to the speakers, an amp would help you don't need to go mad and go for the biggest thing availiable just some thing with a bit more power then your head unit

i had an original headunity in my Uno and i replaced it with just a simple pioneer headunit and the difference was instant. You can run 6x9's off the headunit but generally a headunit will only be around 45-50 watts and runnin at an even lower RMS. Now i have installed an amp for my 6x9's and it sounds awesome.

Distortion comes from either the hu amp running too hard and destroying the signal by amplifying it too much (amp goes into clipping)...or defective wiring may cause it, but the speakers may also be knackered!

But generally, factory HU''s are only dead low powered anyhoo, the Cinq standard one was something like 4 x 5W, so I stuck in a 4 x 45W to solve that!
