I have a fiat punto multi jet 1.9 2008 gearbox grinding only does it in neutral
Well I drove it 15 miles ish with the grinding reletivly quiet then bam crunching loud noise
Took gearbox apart found it to be rear bearing was completely destroyed and loads of gear cogs destroyed!! I was told it was thrust bearing grrgh
Well I brought another gearbox off ebay turns out had same noise only in neutral though so didn't drive it took rear half cover off only to find bearing destroyed but as I was cautious and didn't continue driving I hadn't destroyed the drivegear cogs whoopi
So am going use salvaged bearing from original which just happened to be the same cool
to replace the destroyed one easy fix just need circlip pliers and bearing puller and job done
first undo the oil drain near the diffential on side Allen key I use the correct size key and 8 mm spanner as the subframe prevents use of rachet.
Also only had to jack engine up slightly just take wait I found a scissor jack perfect as you can adjust up and down smoothly remove the gearbox side mount, and the plate the mount is attached to as it will get in the way the gear selector cables
undo two torx bolts to remove the selector unit lift up turn slightly about 90 degrees to clear the gear forks lift out making sure to be in neutral gear.
Then undo about 12 torx bolts around casing and one Allen key bolt check you got all as there's one just above the differential hidden from casual view then lower engine till case is cleared of the wheel arch and pry gently off remove the case carefully as the gears will most likely come with it due to the selector rods if you can keep them on the gearbox much better as will be easier to remove case without losing bits check out the cogs fir damaged teeth end ones easy to change inner ones not so easy to do!
You can buy complete bearing set for around £150 ebay.
I was lucky enough to have another gearbox to utilise clean all broken metal and debris from inside gearbox luckily there is a magnet bottom front of the the bell housing that will have captured most of the the metal particles spray down the gears with brake cleaner turning the lot to ensure no trapped metal fragments as I believe the broken bearings were what caused damage to the gear cogs!!
Replace the damaged bearing/s
Sealent round the bell housing I would use permanent joint as hopefully won't have to do it again anytime soon.
Put back together lining the rods up can be tiny bit of a challenge but when on replace bolts in diagonal till all inserted (ps don't forget the Allen key bolt at bottom of the the housing!
Refit the gear selector assembly do not force it if you have it right it will just slot in place becareful not to twist and put it in gear with out the assembly fully inserted as it will get stuck and you'll have take it apart again to free it!! Be warned!
Put gearbox plate and bolt up side mount reconnect gear selector cables
Check all bolts and connection points undo oil cap on top of gearbox fill oil I put 3 litre in mine check for leaks underneath car before filling completely replace filler cap put back battery remove jack under check in neutral!! start car check gears and hopefully be no noise at gearbox yay
Thanks for reading.
If you go to buy any car and has grinding noise on the gearbox either leave it or push the seller for lower price incase it the gearbox knackered ok. Good luck ps the circled one is the destroyed bearing
