My Cigarette lighter in my 2004 1.9JTD Multiwagon kept melting the fuse so there was a short somewhere. I also wanted to repair the orange ring around it which no longer illuminated. Ive also shown where i added a belkin USB charger to the useless coin holder as discovered on a previous thread.

Firstly remove the 2 side panels at the footwell - console sides. Drivers side just need a bit of elbow grease to yoink it off, on the passenger side i think there is also a single screw up into the dash, then give it a yoink... i never took any pics of that bit sorry!

Also grab the edges of the leather gaitors at the handbrake and gearstick and unclip them from the console. use a flat head screwdriver to assist if required.

Step 1

lift the rubber out of the cupholder to reveal 2No. star head screws - remove these.

Step 2

Now move both front seats forward as far as they will go and get into the back seat and below the centre vent are these 2No star head screws - remove these too.
2.jpg

Step 3

Remove said vent to reveal another 2 screws - remove these as well and take the rear panel off.
3.jpg

Step 4

On both sides at low level, remove these star head screws (hence why you moved the front seats forward earlier)
4.jpg

Step 5

Get back in the front and use a flat head screwdriver to unclip the plastic cover below the centre armrest
5.jpg

Use an allen key to remove the 3 allen bolts holding the centre armrest - and remove it out of the way.
6.jpg

Step 6

At the passenger side unclip the electrical connector for the buttons left of the gearstick.
7.jpg

The console should be fairly mobile now and ready for lifting out.

Step 7

As you lift up the console reach underneath to the cigarette lighter and unclip the electrical connector. You'll also need to manipulate the 2 gaitors so that they pass through the holes in the console. After the console is removed you are left with this.

Give it a clean

I dont have the car long but i took the opportunity to give it a good clean as it was pretty boggin....

Cigarette lighter

Heres the underside of the cigarette lighter - 3 pin connection, cant remember the exact wire colours, but the blue was +12v, black was earth and i think the green/yellowish was the light feed for the orange ring. The bulbs for lighting the ring are 286 capless bulbs - about £2 for a pack of 10 on ebay. The bulb holder slides into the orange cylinder and there are metal legs which make contact with metal plates on the side of the cig lighter to give +12v and earth. To get the cigarette lighter out, pull the bulb holder out of the orange cylinder - (note the way it came out) then get the metal cylinder out of the orange ring first (push up on the electrical connection and twist/rotate) ... its trial and error. Once you get that bit out the orange ring comes out easy enough.

USB charger

Refitting is reverse of removal, just watch where the cig lighter cable is routed, the handbrake mechanism had caught the blue wire and it was shorting on the handbrake (hence the problem). So i taped that up and cable tied the cables away from the mechanism. While i was in there i tapped into the wires and connected in my belkin USB charger as mentioned in another thread. I just removed the rubber coin holder (pushes out from below), gave it a good clean, and then i drilled a 19mm hole from the rear, and i had to trim back some of the rubber coin holder bits to allow it to sit nice. then popped it back in and connected up the wires.

All back together

So all in and working heres what it now looks like.

Not much to it but i hope it helps somebody. Takes about 5-10mins to get the console out.

The Belkin USB chargers were from ebay (get the genuine Belkin ones otherwise they wont fit with the air duct to the rear). I could only find them sold as a pair, just that seller i guess though. There's another thread detailing replacing the coin holder with MDF etc but i dont have time to do that at the minute so using existing coin holder i think looks OK at the minute. So credit to that OP for the suggestion, but i cant mind who and its late now to go looking, but search and you will find it.

Any questions please ask. (y)
