Hi has any one else had this problem, my GP 1.9 sporting suddenly came to a hault the other day, car would start but then stop. Was towed to dealer where it took them 2 days to trace, first they thought it was the crank sensor, they replaced it but didnt make any difference. Eventually they said it was the EGR valve, does wnybody know what this is and has any one else had this problem...Thanks Mike..

I dont think the valve was the problem, i think the dealer is trying to fob me off. The car would start but stopped straight away, it wouldnt rev at all. It seemed like a fuel problem..... Anyone any ideas..

EGR valve is part of the fuel system...............

This fault is comon on modern TDI's i know Renaults had issues - check out this info lifted from honest John website.

EGR valve should open to allow carbon dioxide, which acts as a cooling gas) into the combustion chambers when the engine is under load (>30% boost). This allows the combustion chamber temperature to drop and thus the temperature of the exhaust gases. If it sticks in the closed position the exhaust gas temperature will rise causing a) the turbo bearings to fail and b) engine oil into the induction system. This will cause the engine to go on running until it has consumed all its oil and then it will go bang.

My advice would be dont be fobbed off and check the intercooler as they are the usual give away sign it will look swollen if you cooked your engine.

Guys guys guys please no scare stories!

EGR's main purpose is to reduce Nox as part of EOBD.

A stuck EGR valve will not blow the engine up,all it is doing is taking a percentage of unburnt gases & returning it for combustion. If engine does overheat the injector duration is shortened & stopped if required.....remember its Fiat were talking here not renaults:yuck:

the reason the engine shut off again is because it recognises the fault and stops to prevent more damage!
Cars have their own "brain" and if a sensor says something isnt working as it should then it will try to fix the fault of shut down that system.

All these know alls who know nothing, stop the scare stories and let the guys who work on the cars do their job. Seems to be a lot of mountains growing out of mole hills lately!

Fiat dont have a EGR problem though unlike some manufactuers (as you rightly mention) which is something we can smugly smile to ourselves about;)

I am glad to hear what you have said about the Fiats being very robust, however my only concern is that with such long sevice intervals on GP's 18000 miles for oil changes only time will tell. I think all earlier fiats were 12000 miles intervals previously. I might be barking up the wrong tree but wouldn't an oil change at 9000 mile or 6 months help protect the engine / components?
Also i am not trying to scare people i have had first hand experience in the past. It is good to know that a Fiat a engine will shut down when this type of fault occurs - unlike some other manufacturers that did not and did wreck the engine.
