Any easy power upgrades for the 1.9 sporting? I'm assuming there must be some easy mods coming round soon as no doubt the 170bhp version is only going to be tweaked up. Looked at getting the ECU remapped but that wasnt available for grande puntos at the time I got in touch with a place that does it.

What about upgrading the size of the turbo, anyone mass making upgrades for the grande punto's yet?

Induction from GSR should give you good boost when its available contact Peter at GSR engineering 020-7005-0909 and have a word with him tell him I give you his number ;) all the best

Phil (y) and as toad said Chipped UK [wink]

Like has been said alot of companys do a decent remap for the 1.9 sporting and you get some brilliant power gains around 40+hp and as Phil said GSR are making inductions for the GP i believe.

as for the turbo I wouldn't bother looking into getting a bigger one because your only just gonna get more lag.

I was possibly looking at one of these :-

http://www.bmcairfilters.com/infoVAS.asp

Have measured the circumference of the hose running from the airbox and its 220mm, take away about 6mm for the width of the walls and divide by pie gives me a diameter of 68mm so I think I'll need the 70mm one.

Looks like I should be able to fit the unit just where the old box is currently, does this idea sound feaseable?

When I first got my car I got in touch with chiptuninguk for a road run test but they didnt support my car at the time, so I guess I should get in touch with them again though I should get the air filter sorted first huh :)

Also, what about a dump valve, do they serve a good purpose or are they just extra noise? ;p

As well, just noticed the BMC CDA carbon induction kits, they dont do one for a grande punto but the actual filter is pretty bog standard its more about the fitting/hosing which I'm sure would be easy to make up, are they any good and are they much better than the venturi type filter?

The CDA kit is better as it allows a higher proportion of oxygen rich air to get in to the engine. It made our Sei gain another 4bhp over the Venturi system. It is possible to fit one to the GP, it is just a case of getting the connections right to fit it (ie 90 degree bends, reducers, extra hose etc...)

Dump valves not required on diesel turbo.

Does it not have the same performance gains, there idea is to get rid of turbo lag right, so when you change gear the pressure is right there again?

I know when I had my peugeot 206 HDi I took it to severn valley motorsports as I used to live by it and they suggested a dump valve might be a cheap option to get extra power and the HDi engines work on new high pressure so you dont have the same problem you used to get with old diesel where you had to get extra pressure to make a dump valve work effectively?

Problem you will have is to pick up air from the right place.

I have spent quite some time on the 1.9. Getting the intake in the best way possible creates more difficulties than most of the cars I got involved so far.

Check out previous thread may shed some light on it - or may not

After researching further there is no performance difference just noise. And yes I totally agree the induction system on the GP Sporting JTDm is a joke! You have your work cut out Oldschool :p.

As for diesel tuning you can up-rate your turbo without extra lag:

There is a guy on Alfa Owners forum with a 147 JTDm and is running at 225hp and 470nm of torque. And even with a 2 Pass FMIC, Bigger Turbo (Still VGT) and extra intake tubing it only added 0.1sec onto the spool up time. Check out the thread and dyno graph here:

How easy is it and how much will it cost to upgrade the turbo?

HI MATE, I HAVE 1.9 SPORTING. I HAVE FITTED A TUNIT BOX, GOT IT SECOND AND OFF EBAY FOR £160, AND £70 TO GET IT SET UP ON ROLLING ROAD AND ITS NOW CHUCKING OUT 162BHP AND 236IBS OF TORQUE.

How is the Tuning box going?, as most if not all the different sites refer to JTD's rather than Multijets, surely there is a difference in software in the ECU to achieve this????

the tunit box is going great!, i recently put it up a setting to 6 and feels even better, the slightest touch of the pedal and ur off in any gear!, the turbo comes in earlier and the power lasts longer, overtaking is a breeze and u dont even have to change down a gear. if u go to www.tunit.com it will tell u were ur local tunit dealer is and u have an option to try before u buy. They cost £500 new, they also do re-furbished ones for 299 but i got mine off ebay for 150!!! bargain!!!! it did not have correct settings on but i made an appointment at tunits rolling road in chorley, lancs. It cost 70 quid and the put the correct settings on it and it chucked out 162bhp on setting 5!, i was well inpressed! the other benifit is there is no difference in fuel consumption if u drive it nice. :slayer:

Glad to hear that the tuning box is doing the biz for you.

Spider tuning box 160 - 165bhp and 207 to 250lb/ft of torque seems to be doing it for me!! totally transforms the car into what a Sporting version should be, my friend in the trade(Fiat) gave it a brief run around a town centre ring road and we agreed it sure increases the grin factor, BIG TIME!!

BTW steady 90mph in 6th 44/45 to the gallon, not too shabby I think.
180 mile journey a couple of weeks ago, average speed 63mph, 46+ to the gallon. That'll do for me.I surprised a Golf 1.9TDI a few times on the M1, especially when I powered away from him going up a long steady gradient, his face sort of said Punto's should'nt be able to do that?????
Even the wife has commented its a different, nicer, smoother car and she can not be called into cars at any price!

For me the torque increase is the real benefit, many times you arrive at a bend and think "hang on a minute, we're a bit quick here" .No surprise when you look at the speedo and its nearly 20mph more than you think!

ALLEGEDLY !!! rumour has it this is what could happen if you fitted a tuning box.
