Styling In the process of fitting front fogs to my GP

I had the same thoughts about retro-fitting foglights at the front. I got the car on my ramps and had a good look underneath particularly in the areas behind the front valance where you would expect to see wiring, unfortunately there didnt appear to be any spare cables or terminations whatsoever. I was a bit disapointed so I took an indicator bulb out to see what the display would say instead.......:D

Its always puzzled me why car makers choose to put the front and rear fog lights on seperate circuits. Your tail lights and head lights are not on seperate circuits and come on together, and if its foggy, its just as foggy behind you as well as in front of you, so why should fog lights be different?

T??
If you decide to fit front fog-lights......I cant see a reason why you couldnt take a feed directly from the rear fog light circuit. Assuming the increased current, resistance, and voltage drop in the circuit doesnt confuse the body computer (grey area for me) the only problems I could see would be if the relay contacts and fuse could handle the increased current, (I guess both could be upgraded if required). Routing suitable cables...and of course.....the fact the front lights couldnt be turned on without the back lights being on at the same time......am I thinking too hard?

I think Fiat could have missed out on something here. I am sure they could have made something out of offering an easy to fit front fog light kit as an accessory and making provision for retro-fitting fogs by installing the wiring and fitting a suitable body computer (if required) when the car was built in the factory. Ok it would increase costs but it would be negligable. The dash-display can tell me there is ice on the road and that the hatch is open in about 10 different languages, I am never going to use that facility despite paying for it so why not fit a fog light-ready body computer.

Something else I would have gladly paid for is a quickclear windscreen. Quite popular on Fords/Jags and well worth the money in this weather. Once you have had one of these believe me you dont want to be without it, even my Mums Fiesta has one!

C-mon Fiat, there is money to be made here.....or maybe it just doesnt freeze and fog-up as much in Italy as it does here.

Re: Fog lights -dealer fit

Thanks for that T14086, I had read this helpful post but I thought just maybe Fiat may have included circuitry in higher spec cars for fog lights including switches and it was a case of buying lights and fitting. If this is not the case I won't bother. Even thinking of just putting lights in without power as it just finishes front off perfect. Never use them much myself.
You realise it will fail it's first MOT in a couple of years time then? All lights fitted have to work !

It would be a good idea, it might stop all the f**wits in this country that drive around with their front fogs on all the time when it's not foggy.(y)

Would you want a Fiesta ??:D

Well picked up on, I hadn't thought that far ahead. Guess I'll just have to forget about it if not possible.

T14086 You don’t happen to know the part numbers do you? and do they come with the fixing hardware (am I right in assuming they come with the nuts and bolts and the holes are pre-drilled)?

Thanks

IIRC as long as they are not wired it doesn’t matter as they are classed as cosmetic according to a mate....

Then again Ring do a "wire free" relay unit which only requires a wire to the sidelights, and 2 to the battery and come with a remote control to switch them on and off, it defaults to off when you turn your lights off to prevent you from leaving the fogs on..

Sledge You are only permitted (by UK law) to use your rear foglights In Fog when visibility is below 100 mtrs where as your front fogs are to be used when visibility is seriously reduced be fog, rain , sleet or snow...

Thanks for the info on the Ring system Andy Monty, I have looked at site and saved to favourites to look in to it more. (y)

Which front fogs for my GP?

I have an 1.2 active and have fitted projector lamps in the blanking plates as i couldn't find any "proper" fiat shaped lamp units at the time anyhow Shop4parts now stock them :D what is the difference between the Sport and Non sport lamp units? is the Sporting bumper a different shape or are the mounts in a different place? As i think they look better with the black surround than the non sport version which has a silver surround and they are £5 per unit cheaper  (yes i'm a yorkshire man through and through)

http://www.shop4parts.co.uk/index.cfm/method/catalogue.list/

many thanks..

No i fitted a set of projector style foglamps through the blanking plates over Christmas all the wiring is now in I couldn't find the OEM fog lamp units at the time and my local dealer drew a blank. Just happened to look on shop4 parts (they didn't list them at the time) and they now stock them but in 2 types a "Non-sport" and a "Sport"

After speaking to Shop4parts i've ordered the "sport" fog lamps as its just the reflector colour that's different..

T14086 from your guide you don't make it clear if the old blanks Push In to the engine bay to remove or push out?

And what fixings do you need for the lights as i forgot to ask that question are they just bog standard metric threaded bolts/ set screws if so I'll be getting them in stainless

Start off by removing the blanking plates where the lights fit into, these need a firm push 'in the way' ;)

Fit foglights using the previously purchased screws,3 each side, two at top and one underneath.;) These 6 screws are apparently listed on eper.

if i were to buy the fog lights for my GP would fiat install them or where else could i get them wired up, as i do not feel confident in fitting them.

thanks T14068 so they are "screws" was hoping to get some stainless steel fixing sorted from the local hardware store to make any future removal easy

James if your really not happy about wiring in the lights take a look at the ring "easy" fit system £25 ish all you need is 3 connections to/ from the unit and an earth for the lights (earth refers to the body shell of the car or the -ative post on the battery)

"all" you need to do is put the red wire on the battery, a black wire onto the -ative side of the battery
the other black wire onto the side light supply (i took mine from the left hand headlight unit under the rubber seal and just scotch hooked it on) ((they are clearly marked which is which))

teh yellow wire is the supply to teh lamps and comes with a spliced Y cable to link the lamps..

The switch is wireless and opperates from a battery like your puntos remote control..

Im half tempted to remove this when i fit the new lamps and fit a propper switch inside and mount the relay in a small IP65 rated box in the engine compartment. i rushed the original job (but its all sound wiring wise) as it was flipping cold in December when i did it this time i'll be neater with the wire routing etc...

They arrived today and have been fitted tonight :D

picked up a relay as well tonight but have butchered the old wiring to see how they look and i think they look great.

the fixings are M6 metric i used a M6x25 countersunk for the top fixing and 2x M6x25 socket caps with washers for the bottom (all A2 stainless)

the lamp units where larger than i imagined and the left (passenger side) was a bit of a pain to get in

Foglamp unit

The lamp is made to be plugged into a loom obviously i don't have the loom with plugs for fog lamps so i used T14086 idea of using 110 red crimps and heat shrinking the entire spade and about 1" up the wire to prevent any chance of a short..

socket

and the finished job bar the proper relay over the weekend
