Just wondering if anyone is (or is considering) running their 1.9 JTD on bio-diesel?

Obviously the cost savings would be attractive, but I'm also aware that I might as well do my bit if my car is capable of running on fuel that doesn't cause war, pollutes, or is in finite supply.

Any experiences?

I contacted Fiat about this, their line is:

"Biodiesel can currently be used in all of our diesel vehicles in a minimum percentage, we recommend no more than 5% mix, if this is abused it may affect your warranty."

so there you go....:)

Thanks for this. Nice to see that Angel Tuning think bio-diesel helps smooth running - I was a little afraid it might be the opposite.

I'm also suprised that there isn't more interest in bio-diesel, given the popularity of the JTD engines in the GP and its price?

I think the official FIAT line of 5:95 bio / white mix is probably because in Germany most commercial diesel already has 5% bio-diesel in it anyway (like Tesco use up to 5% bio-ethanol in their petrol in the UK) - and they're just playing safe.

Bio-diesel is known to bugger-up fuel pumps. Standard diesel lubricates pump as fuel passes through. Bio-diesel leaves a film on the inside of the pump which eventualy gums it up.

Yes in its 100% pure form it will over time but thats why its mixed with 'white diesel' and it actually lubricates better than standard diesel.

What about contamination though?

I wonder how much research the Fuel system manufacturers put into ensuring compatability with the British standard for Derv?
I`m not going to try it as I don`t have £2,500 spare for a new common rail system, if it does not work out. Will watch any experiments on here though with interest:devil:

I fiiled my grande punto sporting with biodisel yesterday, they asked me if my car was common rail and said a 100% mix wasnt recommended for common rail engines and that a 75% max woul dbe recommened. It just so turned out I had quarter of a tank of normal diesel so filled her up, no problems on the way home the car now smells like a chip shop but when I went to start her this morning it took about 2 minutes of turning her over before it would start.

Once I got it started it seemed to run fine except on my way to work the "check diesel fuel filter" light came on though I have read that yo uneed to replace your fuel filter if youve been using carbon fuel for a while due to biodiesel cleaning your pipes and blocking up the filter with ****?

I used to run the vRS on 10% bio diesel... all european cars should be able to run 5% (as thats what you buy on a french forecourt for example when you buy diesel..) skoda reccomened that it would run on 100% bio diesel if you changed the fuel filter every 3,000 miles...

apparently the problem is bio diesel has alot more water content, so will clog up your fuel filter alot quicker... I suggest you replace your fuel filer, run your tank empty (well nearly empty), run a tank of normal diesel, then replace the fuel filter again....: )

On a side note, £51 for a fuel filter? hahahha

Anywhere doing cheap fuel filters for grande punto sportings?
