i am currently changing the sound system in the GP would i be able to fit 13cm speakers in the from even though the fitting is for 16.5cm? as the store where i am purchasing them from has a better selection on 13cm than 16.5cm. also does anyone know the max output from the speakers?

im looking at either elpine or fusion ones, but im not sure whether to just choose ones that do not look as good. and when i fit them will i still need an adpater even if they are 16.5cm??

lol, im sorry, but alpine and fusion arent very good and why get 13cm? there is adequate room for 16.5 and some tweeters so get a good set of componants, please! for the sake of the poor car

what would you say to buy then?? recomend me some and links to websites??

If you want to upgrade the sound system then don't go buying speakers that will only downgrade it.

Speakers are expensive, stay away from budget stuff like Fusion, and don't bother with smaller speakers, they aren't designed to do the job you want them to do.

What you want are some component speakers at the front. These speakers have a woofer and a tweeter. Generally a decent set will set you back about £100-£150. JL are a safe bet for reasonably priced stuff in thier lower range, but they will probably set you back about £120.

Sounds like a lot, but you will be pissing away your cash and waste your time fitting crappy 13cm speakers.

Check out http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk these guys have some really good stuff in stock. Don't forget to put a roll of Dynamat on each of the doors around where the speaker is too, this will seriously improve the speaker performance...

Wattage is just one part of the sound system look for speakers that can take as high an RMS figure as you can find, and not just a highest wattage (PMPO) and the largest frequency response range you can afford nad match the Ohm rating to the head unit or amp..

have a read of these..

You can run comps off of the head unit amp. The wattage advertised is only the RMS, which is really the most you should be putting through the comps at any time, and generally if they are amped youwould have the gain turned down a fair bit to get decent sound quality. With most speakers you will find that you will get a lot of noise when the stereo is on full power if you run the speakers at thier RMS power... The only real way to make more sound is to have more speaker E.G. a larger sub, or more smaller ones.

ok then i have read through these and what is an ideal RMS then?
thanks for your help so far

There's no real ideal RMS. If you are amping your speakers then you will want to, for example, buy a 2x100 watt amp for a set of 100 watt speakers, then set the gains on the amp correctly. The gain is basically your master volume control on the amp. You want to turn the head unit to as loud as it it can go, then turn it down a small ammount, then set the gain so that the speakers are not crackling at this volume. Thats the best initial setup, then they can be fine tuned to get a decent sound stage.

If you are running the speakers off of a head unit you don't need to worry. A lot of head unit amps will churn out about 45 watts. This is plenty to run a set of comps off of as most are rated at around 120 watts. Don't worry about the number of watts written on the box though, you don't need to put that much power through them to get them to run...

I have got Pioneer TS-C1700R Component speakers in my GP. They sound gorgeous its proper crisp sound they are only 70watt RMS power but the quality is good. I had them fitted at Uni-Car in Leeds so don't ask about fitment cos i dnt have a clue but all i know is they sound good. I also have infinity sub in the boot and sony x-plod 6x9's on parcel shelf powered by infinity amp and it sounds nice exspecially cos its got a bass control remote in the front so you don't have to sound like a chav. The Pioneer components are 160 quid but i say they are worth it. Have a look at them!

Very interesting thread this...

Would like to know if anyone has actually changed their speakers in the doors of their GP themselves yet and do you have any advise how to do it and not to break anything

i think that the front ones will be fine and you just unscrew the door panel but i am not too sure on how the back ones are fitted is it true the back seats have to be taken out to fit them??

i was thinking about changing the speakers in my GP. They distort when you turn it up and i was thinking of upgrading. However....i have Blue and Me and so don't want to change the head unit otherwise it will affect the telephone. Do you think wiring better quality speakers to the original head unit will increase quality and stop distortion? I'm not interested in blowing my brains out i just want better quality. People have said that the standard speakers are cheap as chips and so was just wondering if i can just replace them without changing anything major.
cheers

it depends on how many pre-outs the standard head unit has i am sure that you can change one set of speakers (e.g both front speakers) and link them up, otherwise i think you might need to change the head unit.
