After washing I occasionally used to apply a wax polish to my previous vehicle, in the belief that this provided an extra barrier against the elements and encouraged water to run off the paintwork etc.

The handbook for my Dynamic (New Orleans Blue) states that I should not use waxes containing petroleum or petroleum-based products. The warranty booklet states the 3 year paintwork guarentee is void if such products are used.

The car waxes I have examined which list ingredients mention such petroleum based products. Several do not mention what the waxes contain.

Do members wax their cars - and if so what do they use.

Many thanks for assistance,

James

I dont use waxes but a good polish. I use Mer which is some american brand and quite expensive £15 for a decent size bottle. I its good stuff you can do glass, metal, painted surfaces even plastic it also removes tar :).

Mer is wicked stuff, you can get it for less than £15 a litre, u can buy it online for £4.49 500ml, so 1ltrs only £8.98.
You can get it from loadsa places including:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mer-Car-Polish-500-bottle/dp/B0006TLBXA (this is the cheapest)

Anything that states clear coat safe will do the trick. I use Meguiars, easy to use and lasts a long time. Also buy a wash mitt, do not use a sponge to clean your car it will scratch it.

No, no, no Andrew56......if you look at your warranty book again it states "Not to use WASHING ADDITIVES containing petroleum or petroleum based products"......if you added that to your bucket of water you'd start melting away the gloss laquer....make it dull....petrol, white spirit, turps etc will all "melt" paint.
Using it in a car wax formulation is a completely different thing and infact, in most cases, you have to in order for the wax to work, clean and bond to the paintwork.

I have the same colour as you and in my experience we are a bit different to the other guys with our New Orleans Blue.
Some wax's I tried tend to leave the bonnet, for instance, looking rather mottled and bloomey....the only one that works is Auto Glym Super Resin Polish. Then if you really wanna make the paintwork look like glass you can go over it again with Auto Glym Ultra Deep Shine.
Put it on the wheels as well it stops the bloody brake dust from getting a hold.

supagard car polish must also be ok, since most FIAT dealerships offer that as an extra...

And nothing to do with the massive profit margin.;)

well there's that of course - but surely even they wouldn't offer a treatment that would damage the paintwork - otherwise they'd be paying for it down the line... i think the stuff's called supagard paint seal cream.

Polish alone will offer no protection, you should use wax. Mer is crap compared to products of today.

£160 option that cost the dealer about £35 profit margins like that they would proberly sell you brine as a coolant!:D
Although I polish then Supaguard mine every 6 months.

i used some turtle wax spray stuff, and i applied it with a mitten, the end result, a car with loads of waxy smears on it. waste of time :bang:

i polished and polished but it didnt seem to do anything...

Yep,turtle wax Mer etc are average products and were good in their day. Car car products have improved and there is much better out there nowadays. Chemical guys, Poorboys, Jeffs, Megs, Blackfire, Menzerna, Einszett are some of the best out there.

Guys, I'm a rookie at detailed washing,

But I'm already using a shmitt glove from The Edge. Using Car-Lack shampoo. And washing with the two buckets method.

Video of two bucket wash method on Google

Using a Waffle Wave towel to dry the car.

Using 1Z (einzett) No tar to remove grease and tar spots.

In my next wash I'll use 1Z Balsam to protect exterior plastics and will try Chemical Guys 5050 Collectors Edition Paste Wax.

This is body safe and will not damage my paint and clearcote (varnish).

I have exotica red.

The tough problem... is that I got several quality control stickers, thanks to the Melfi plant :bang:

Actually of http://www.carpremium.net/ a Portuguese look a like (y)

On the outside I got two large 10x5 cm stickers on the bottom of front and rear bumper. The paper cames off with hot water, but I need to use no tar (tomorrow after a simple wash of some new MicroFiber towels) to remove the glue.

On the inside I get smal, 2x1 cm stickers in doubles and triples on the rails of the front seats, on the boot and a lot more of corners. Most are hard to remove and leave part of them behind. Will be a busy day in the next weekend.
