I'm currently driving a new 06 Punto with dualogic, which has done about 150kms (and driven once/twice a week). I've noticed whenever I'm changing gears from first to second in manual mode there's a bit of a jerk - anyone know why and/or if this is normal? Thanks!:)

Re: First to second gear

a lot of people complain about this in semi-autos

do you take your foot off the accelerator before changing?

Re: First to second gear

Thanks jug for responding. I've actually asked the dealer whether I need to take my foot off during gear change and he said it doesn't really matter; it just makes it smoother if the accelerator is relaxed (but to answer your question no I don't). The weird thing is, this only started happening tonight; its been sitting in the garage for almost a week now (I don't drive it very often) - I wonder if this has anything to do with it, or the fact that its a new car and it hasn't been 'smoothed out' yet?

Re: First to second gear

no it should never "smooth out" (well you should hope it doesnt, if it does its due to wear)

its a case of getting used to doing a smooth change.

i had the same problem when i first drove a semi-auto, and it took a bit of getting used to. it put me off buying one.

i've spoke to many people with the same problem, and the general concensus is you should not accelerate during gearchange, especially beween 1st and 2nd, in the same way you would drive a manual car.

i've never come across a problem with the transmission that could cause this. to put your mind at rest, try driving another car the same as yours, if you ask your dealer nicely they should let to you.

Re: First to second gear

Hmmm.. I'm not too sure about this. I'll give it a drive around today and see how it goes (y)

Re: First to second gear

Thanks, though I haven't had any problems with the transmission since it was posted :)

Re: First to second gear

if you do alot of urban driving the cluch wears quicker than the computer expects so if your mechanic tells the car it has had a cluch fitted with the examiner it will relearn the bite point it has a speed sensor on the input shaft of the gear box and engine speed sensor of course so i knows were its at and whats hapening

also you can axcelerate during gear changes the ecu controls the throtle for you also it can double de cluch if you fire it down a cog or two quickly give it a try its realy fun

so if it starts doing it again take it to your dealer and if they say it's fine you can say that it isent and there is a cluch relearn in their examiner they can youse to sort it out

Re: First to second gear

Problem started to happen again last night, though this time its more of a juddering rather than a jerk. Any ideas why this happens when starting from stand still? (BTW I don't have a clutch; its Dualogic :))

Re: First to second gear

I've just started haveing the same problem with my Dualogic -( the juddering from a standstill ) It started after I hadn't driven for about a week but then seemed to correct itself. It happened again yesterday morning and then again this morning and both times was ok after I had driven about 10km and parked for a while. (btw I don't do a lot of driving either ) It's definitely not normal and quite noticable even to passengers. Will be taking it in tomorrow so will report back with any news.

Can you please clarify - is your juddering 'within' the car itself, or does the whole car actually shake back and forth?

Re: First to second gear

It's within the car - just as it starts to move. Of course after having experienced the problem for the past 2 days, when I drove to the dealer this morning it was absolutely fine. They want to keep it overnight and do a cold start tomorrow to see if it happens again. It wasn't much fun catching the bus back home!

Keep us posted on the outcome :)

Re: First to second gear

Ok - the latest is that they were advised by their technical department to make some adjustments ( not sure exactly what) which they did today and are keeping the car overnight to do another cold start and to see if the problem has been resolved. I'm hoping to pick the car up tomorrow and will get as much info as I can on what has been done.

Re: First to second gear

Cool.. I'm going to take my car to the dealer some time next week so it would be great if you could let us know what's causing the juddering :)

Re: First to second gear

Well I picked the car up today and was told that on the advise of the technical dept. ( apparently they can't make any adjustments on new cars without the ok from their technical dept.) they have re-calibrated the gear box, whatever that means. Anyway will wait and see if this has made any difference - let me know what happens with yours. Ta and good luck!

Has it made any difference yet? :)

Re: First to second gear

I read somewhere (on this forum) that it might be worth putting the gearbox under the Fiat examiner and/or have the clutch relearn - should I ask the dealer to do this when I bring my car in next week?

Re: First to second gear

Fingers crossed, but it hasn't happened again since I've had the car back. Let me know how you get on.

Re: First to second gear

Well guess what? I hadn't driven the car for about 6 days and today it started happening again - not as bad as last time but none the less it's not normal and not what I'd expect from a new car!! There was one particularly bad judder as I was going up a slight hill in 2nd - not sure if it was attempting to change gears when it happened. I suppose it's back to the dealers - what's happening on your end?
