hi all. i'm so grateful to everyone here who's contributed over the last 3-4 months whilst i first considered and then ordered my GP.

i went to pick it up today and was surprised again by the dealership (again, not in a good way). i had specifically agreed the car would not be pre-registered, but i found out today it has been. obviously, i'm not pleased with this, but i'm not sure what my options are - especially after waiting 13 weeks.

what is pre-registration all about and what are the downsides of it for me, the real buyer. thanks again.

p.s. haven't paid yet as visa's system was down...

The only down side is you will be the second owner and technically the car is not new if the garage has registered the car for themselves. I don't think it makes much difference when you sell - just check the car is not an import as this will effect the second hand value slightly.
Personnaly i would complain to the garage as you have ordered this car to be made - call their bluff and see what they will give you if you have not paid for the car.

As I understand it when I bought mine, if it was registered before the 1st September, you would have been eligible for the amazing 3 year, 0% no deposit, pay next year deal. Maybe your dealer is pulling a financial fast-one of some sort unless you've got that deal anyway?? I seem to recall that also some other discount of about £200 was on offer for a pre-reg model, can't remember what that was exactly though. My dealer's always been great - I think he reads this forum too !!

oh, i did complain, but they're not budging. i think my only option would be to walk away...

Mine's been terrible throughout - unknowledgeable, poorly organised and, most of all, seriously dishonest.

Are Fiat Supasaver's prices for pre-reg's?

Nope, I paid £10750 for my GP Sporting in Black last week, and its brand new with me being the first registered keeper.

Lucky to get a set of free mats & half tank of fuel...dealers dont make the profits on new cars people think they do!

thanks for your responses over the weeks...

yeah, the deal's good for a 'new' car, but not incredible for a 'pre-reg' and i'm particularly annoyed that they continue to lie - the order form was photocopied, tippexed and then altered before being faxed to me for approval - literally criminal. avoid Thames Fiat!

You have been warned - I mean it.

no, as far as we knew - a normal factory order. perhaps took a little longer than some on here, but has a lot of options... what do you suspect?

Make sure they are only charging you for a second hand car, as that is what you now have. It doesn't matter if it's only been 'used' for 3 days, it is now second hand and this will show on the registration document.

If there is no mention of this car being 'used' on the order form, you can walk away (my choice, given experience of Thames Fiat) or demand that the price be reduced. Check the web for comparison of other pre-reg cars for an appropriate reduction.

For the record, I was horrified by the approach of Thames, if you are talking about Croydon. Their sales manager was an absolute THUG. Do not be intimidated, make sure you familiarise yourself with your rights and stick it to them.

have you bought this car on the 0% finance?
if so they will have registered it before the end of the month to keep the finance deal alive, if it had tripped over onto 1st oct then the finance deal may not be available.
if it is a cash purchase with no discount at all then there is no reason to pre-reg the car and you should claim some sort of compensation. you are within your rights to refuse the vehicle and state what is written on your copy of the order form, "new" vehicle.
should they become awkward just ask them their reasoning for registering it, and ask them when they called you for the authority to register your car as you cannot find anywhere on the order form where it was stated a delivery date or date of first registration.
hope this makes sense,
I do sell the cars and know why they get registered sometimes but this seems an odd one.
Oh, I bet if they registered this one they got their retro target bonus (roughly 3% extra) ask them that too! haha that'll make them jump, especially if you ask for that 3% to be passed on to you for the inconvenience!

Did they have trouble 'obtaining' your car,was it transfered from another branch?

Not that I know of - what would that imply?
