Technical tell tell signs of steering rack problem

I have a faint knocking on bumps and it's nothing more than the suspension and according to me very normal.

'been in touch with some people associated with fiat & they say 'there is a issue with faulty spacers on some vehicles, while not affecting the steering it does make a noise which some may find worrying.Fiat are aware of this & doing all they can to remedy this issue as fast as possible & to the customers satisfaction'

I think mine will just be normal, hope so. Just the posts on here got me worried!!!!

That's one of the negative side-affects for being on a forum. :p Remember that the people on the forum represend only a very small part from all the FIAT owners and most people go to forums if they are having problems. The most happy drivers will not bother to join a forum.

It's very difficult to know if the noise they are talking about is the same like I have for example. I mainly have it when hitting speedbumps and than it sometimes makes a rattling noise from the suspension. I know two people with a GP that have exactly the same. I don't know if I would have it on a bad road because in Holland it's hard to find those. :D

A good tech at dealer will know the noise if its there(y)

Yeah, but if I understand it right and you have the steering rack problem you should notice that in the steering wheel or am I wrong? Because I have no play no strange noise from the steering wheel when driving my baby around.

In fact the car is very responsive because if I sneeze I change lane.:D

Best get it checked out.

Didn't think anything of the knocking noise which affected my GP from new until there was a bit of play in the steering at low speed after about 2000 miles.

Was told by the dealer it mainly affects 1.2 and 1.4 8v cars only, though not sure having read some posts on here as it seems quite widespread.

Still nothing to worry about as Fiat say its safe and when the revised racks arrive and are fitted it will all be okay.

Is the steering rack different on the 8v and 16v version?

Not sure, am a mere mortal relying on the info giving by the service bods at the dealers. :worship:

May have been they're experience at the time that it was just 8v's having the problem as the 16v's petrols came out later on so maybe the problems with those weren't being reported so soon.

Am sure a proper parts recall can't be too long away so most owners who haven't noticed a problem may still get their racks replaced or checked. Would be best for all concerned if all cars were checked for the fault at first service at the very least.

Well believe it or not but today I started to have the same problem with the steering rack. Especially in right corners when you turn the wheel back to the middle it makes a thumping sound/feeling. I was searching on internet in Holland and on a Dutch car website a guy had the same and went to the FIAT dealer. They told him it was a known problem and not to worry as there will be a recall for all punto's affected.

Thats exactly what it feels like. Not everyone seems to get a thump or movement thru the steering wheel but it happens on mine

Unlucky mate!

I think the best is to wait a while because many people got the steering rack replaced with the same faulty one and the problem just came back.

Nothing will be happening until the Fiat factory re-opens after the summer, so we will just have to drive in the cars with slightly dodgy steering, and not tell the people walking on the pavements drooling at the cars as they pass that there's something wrong with it!

:D

I heard from two different guys that spoke to two different dealers that there is a very big chance that there will be a recall for the steering rack.

Seeing as i started one of these threads re the steering rack noise, i guess i should say my penny's worth.

1. I have a 1.3 90BHP multijet, and the noise from the rack was there from brand new.

2. Mine was more a "creaking" noise then thumps and bangs, and was loudest when going at low speeds and over bumpy roads etc.

3. I never detected any free play or any other defect in the steering itself, just the noise.

4. When i took it to my Fiat dealer and went out on a test drive, the guy that came with me heard the noise almost immediately and recognised it as a faulty rack, he was sat in the front passenger seat and also stated that he could "feel" it through the floor. Now i am no mechanic by any means so i dont know quite what he meant by that, unless the steering mechanism goes under the passanger side of the car, i must admit to never "feeling it" but then i didnt sit in that seat very often.

5. When my rack was replaced the noise was immediately gone, have had the car back for a couple of weeks now with no problem what so ever.

My suggestion would be for anyone to take their car back to their dealer if they think they may have a problem and get them to check it out ! it wont cost you anything !

regards

Neil
